Finally got some new toys!
Aquatic Life 36" 6 bulb t5 with lunars

PM r24 Refugium

A big buckeye field supply 5 stage ro with di

I'm waiting on my Mag3 to come in as well. After a couple days of getting plumbing set up, I should be about ready to start making some water

Nice. Where are you storing the SW and FW?

Thanks! It's not a MH, I tried to find something reasonably priced that sat on the tank, but it wasn't easy to do. I saw that the nice DSA tank at city pets has this same fixture right when you walk in and is a gorgeous tank. Figured it would work well.

Working on plumbing now:

View from the back. The middle drain is my emergency drain and the one to the right is my main drain.
View from inside. Left one is my main drain. I have a ball valve hooked up to it and its real low to the bottom for herbie method. Right one is the emergency drain, no need for valve. They will both be bolted to that middle vertical 2x3 with some sort of steel clamp. I haven't used any pvc cement yet but will before adding water. Not sure what I'm doing with the return yet. The mag 3 has a 1/2" connection. I'm reading that I should immediately jump up to a 3/4" for less strain on pump. My output is 1", should I just bump it up to 1" right away from the pump, or should I turn it into 1" right before bulkhead? PVC piping or eheim tubing for return?

The drain line is not where you want to place your ball valve. You do not want to restrict the flow there. The drain will drain only as much water as the return pump sends back to your main tank. It does not drain any more than that and you don't want it to drain less either.Originally posted by Andrew_B View Post

If your pump can pump 300GPH back into your main tank, you want the drain to be able to drain 300GPH or MORE. If you have a drain that can drain 1,000 GPH, it does not hurt, there is no water for it to drain after 300GPH.
Some people want to control flow and they put the ball valve on the return line but I wouldn't do that either. They say it does not hurt the pump to restrict its outflow but I feel like it would. If I do not want a lot of water to pump into the main tank, I use a smaller pump.

@ rage, Andrew is setting it up a herbie method style system.
@ Andrew, how are you making the emergency drain input higher than the normal drain input?
I have an ehiem 1250....you got me thinking I should re-pipe with bigger hose!
I ate my fish that died.
