I agree with Pink 100%. Don't give up just because of one setback. Take that experience and apply it to fixing up your tank. Resist the impulse buys for livestock even if they're free! Free isn't always good! I don't keep a saltwater tank only because the price that comes with it to set one up correctly, but I'm sure keeping a salty tank is a great joy as I find in my freshwater tanks.

+2 Big Pink. you cant find a hobby such as this anywhere else. We share in success and share in tragedy as well. (I get physically sick if my tank crashes or my stupidity kills a plant or animal) If this hobby has taught me anything its patience. It has also taught me chemistry, physics, ecology, enviromental awareness, humanity, conservation, mathmatics, biology, marine biology, botany, zoology, icthyology, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, geography, husbandry, economics..... just to name a few.

Absolutely! We've allbeen there and we allmade ill-advised choices when we began, as bakapuma said, there's a lot to be learned in this hobby, its not a thing you can master in a single "course", in fact, well all be learning for the rest of our lives! That's what makes this hobby so utterly consuming!
Johnsbra, please don't take any of this as an attack, we all want to help and I really do hope you come back, and NEVER, EVER worry about asking questions!
              Good luck!

                Help

I've had my tank almost 6 months and did research for a good year before I even purchased a tank. It took me 4 months just to buy the equipment because I didn't wanna cheap out and kill everything. It was so hard to go to fish stores and walk out with a pump only or some supplies I needed. Finally about two weeks ago I was able to make my first fish purchase after monitoring tank through cycle process and after cycle just to make sure. This hobby has taught me alot of patience and I'm glad I waited so long and took my time and my first purchase was two clowns and a yellow tang. As they are thriving its hard to not go get more fish but I know it would cause a system crash. So I wait n wait. It's truly self gratifying and rewarding to see the fruits of your labor come around when ur tank is beautiful and u have so much pride in it becaus of patience and hard work u put into it keep your head up and listen to people but also research because not everyone is always right

                  Re: Help

I read the OP, shed a tear for the livestock that had the misfortune of landing in the hands of somebody so inept at listening to good advice, then LMAO at the author.

Schadenfreude is yummy sometimes, especially when the recipient of the misfortune deserves it given how he ignored paragraph after paragraph of advice.

Props to BigPink, semper, and everybody else who chimed in with so much help for him. I for one hope that he stays away from here unless he changes attitude towards fellow boxers.

I feel like listening to Rolling Stones, "Sympathy For The Devil". I just don't have it right now. We've all gone through disasters, but this one seemed inevitable from the start. Don't get out the hobby, but next time, listen to what people have to tell you.

                          Lol, nice.

No, I can't say I have in this hobby. I've been given great advice by my peers that I fortunately had the good sense to listen to, plus I do my research as well.

Guys chill out. I know some may think that he should have listened and dont like him for that but put that aside if you dont have something other than an assault on what he did wrong then just dont post. There were plenty of times I wanted to rip my hair out with his choices. But I just bit my tongue and re-worded to a constructive dialogue. I agree with BigPink's posts, we arent here to rip someone and kill their dreams in the hobby. I would like us all to promote people in the hobby and help them not to be discouraged because I know I have had hard times in my keeping discus and FOWLR. Though I did study a lot before starting and still had catstrophes and its questionable the amount of research John put in but in the end its a hard hobby. Its not like fixing up cars or etc. the small things you do can have a big impact on your keeping the fish. But I dont want to see anyone give up especially because they are afraid of asking questions because of the response or lack of help.

No, it felt real good for me. Absolutely.

Jug, there's background to why I feel like I do and I'm gonna leave it at that and will remain quiet on the subject on this forum. No apologies forthcoming from me about it either.
