And you let it fully drain? When I had them they would never re-start I had to manually start them.

I do 90% water changes on my boys 29 and it always restarts so does the one on my wifes 75 drain out 15 gallons after what goes in the sump and that one restarts as well. I do prefer a drilled tank but as long as I don't touch my u tubes no problem restarts like nothing happened

        Re: Sump/Refugium?

Same here. After a power outage, my HOB overflow kicks back on without priming it. I used to do 90-95% water changes completely draining the tank and then refilling and cutting back on the pump and everything will start up the way it was. Right now I'm constantly draining and filling my tank at a similar rate, but if the power cuts off and then cut back on, the overflow will pick up again.

Sorry I have not replied, had a busy week of essays for school and work. I went ahead and threw together a HOB fuge type thing today out of an old filter and some other stuff laying around and it seems to work fine but I am still interested in the HOB overflow because I will be setting up a 75 gallon this summer and it isn't drilled. What type of overflow are you using that re-primes, is it a specific brand or a diy? Id rather not spend a $100 on an overflow when that could go to better lighting for the 75. Also is there a certain amount of light needed for chaeto? I have 20, 1 watt leds, 6500k, 5.5 lumens each over it now.
          Thanks!

If you're not willing to spend $100 on a new one, buy a used one or diy. They both don't need to be primed after the first time. It's more of the type of tube you get for the overflow than it is the brand that matters. Make sure you get a continuous U-Tube for the HOB overflow.

Ok, sounds good then. I will look up some DIY designs when time permits.
              Thanks!

I did exactly what you are doing. My Glass Holes overflow is very quiet, and my Eheim return is very quiet. My used light set
s noisy fans are my problem. I will eventually bump it to the sale, and will go full LED.
The hardware is choice, and no problems on restart.
