  • Oyster reef

Has anyone ever tried using an old Oyster bed in place of live or dead rock? Does it have the same effect as live or dead? As far as appearance goes, I understand you'll be looking at oyster shell's instead of rock.

I'm just curious. We live so close to the gulf coast. Why not use our resources instead of paying top dollar for other's.

    Just curious.

I'm talking about just going out and picking up some small beds of oysters. If your up in the shallows, you see the all the time that have at one point had oysters in them. They no longer do. Just a passing thought.

If you have a free tank never hurts to try and see how it goes

The amount of waste and chemicals washed up on those beaches I wouldn't risk it unless you're keeping cheap disposable fish to begin with.

Plus the crevices that the shell bed would create is just asking for more trouble when food and crap gets trapped under there to rot.

If you do try it be sure to post pics and keep us updated.

I would be worried that your fingers would get cut up with the broken oyster shells. I have a buddy that uses crushed oyster shells fow his shell dwellers.

if you want to grow Oysters. its a good idea. just like live rock is alive. So are Oyster beds. don't know if they will do the same as live rock but they will grow oysters...

It does not sound like it's ever been done or at least tried here on this forum so, I guess i'll blow it off. Just trying to be different.

In the bait shops where we go fishing. they have to clean the Oysters out of their tanks and plumming. Every year and every year it will grow back. I think they would be more of a nuisance.

Try it in like a 20 and test your waters and compare to another salt water tank and see...it wouldn't hurt...and if it works itll be cool
