That's fair. I wasn't sure if you meant this (Quote) or if you were implying that the new Middle East governments that will emerge will provide stability. But I still think IMHO that things are going to continue to get worse.

Darbex- There is also the dirty little secret Economists and Politicians don't like to speak openly about... Inflationary Tax Revenue Increases from the rise of gas prices.

what is the perfect price for gas? if the price goes too low it's a bad thing too. what is the optimal amount/range?

I suppose this is not a good time to mention, that the news has reported lately the top five oil companies recorded combined profits of over 1 trillion dollars in the last year? I know, somewhat off topic....

I know it's not convenient to acknowledge the facts but if you do the research, the break down for the cost of a gallon of gas and where the money goes is something like this...

Most goes to cost of crude oil
            Second largest TAXES
            Third Transport/Storage
            Fourth Refining
            Fifth Profits

The Government gets more money from a gallon of gas than the Oil companies.

no one gives anything away for free. the cost is always passed onto the consumer ultimately, no matter which link in the chain the increase comes from. the profit margins will always be preserved.

                  My point was this...

It is convenient to point out Oil Company profits in order to place blame... BUT, if the Oil company is making record profits at around 9% of the price of a gallon being the profit margin. It only makes sense to be equally or more outraged at the Government for making record gains/income with the 13% they take.

Every time the oil companies make a profit, the government makes 45% more than the oil companies. So, for every dollar of gas you buy, 9 cents goes to Oil Company profit and 13 cents goes to the Government.

The government makes more from a gallon of gas than the oil companies. I find that to be the outrageous part since the Oil Companies do all the work.

Our inspectors from the government are intrinsically aware of the amount they profit from our production and I am certain it comes to play when they decide to shut a platform in. There have been sweeping changes after the BP oil spill, but they simply replaced all the ex-oilfield inspectors with engineering grads from college that have never been offshore before, let alone on a platform. They also stated that we can not feed them, so everyone on a platform can eat whatever they want, except the inspector who has to bring a bagged lunch. It's been quite crazy as of late and I can only expect it to get worse. Most INC's (In non compliance) are rescinded after our compliance department argues them and they are just drowning us in unnecessary paperwork that ultimately is passed to the consumer.

Just what we are having to deal with, but I have heard about the same all across the gulf.

+1 on charles' comments oil companies are only making 9-10% profit on gas. By contrast Wal-Mart makes around 15-20%. It's just we buy much more oil than we do products from Wal-Mart. The ones that are gouging us is the government and the traders on the commodity exchanges.

Brace yourselves folks. In the wake of the Nuclear power plant explosion in Japan, they are ramping up Oil fueled power plants to bring power back and Japan now has a greater need for oil than expected which will drive up the commodities/futures on oil. Prices will shoot up on Monday I predict.
