I wonder if this will be designated as a hate crime? I would contend that any time someone throws acid in another person's face... It is a hate crime. I'm just saying...
PORTLAND, Ore. (CBS/AP/KOIN) Bethany Storro, the 28-year-old Vancouver, Wash. woman who had an acid-like substance thrown in her face Monday night underwent surgery at an Oregon hospital.
Spokeswoman Amber Shoebridge for Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland told reporters Wednesday night that Storro's surgery went well and she was resting.
According to CBS affiliate KOIN, Storro was getting something from her car before heading to Starbucks in downtown Vancouver Monday evening when a young woman approached her and said, "Hey pretty little girl, want to take a drink of this?"
Storro declined the drink and told the woman she was going to Starbucks, according to her family.
The attacker then tossed the liquid on Storro's face, causing her to fall to the ground in what her family calls the worst pain of her life, reports KOIN.
Dr. Nick Eshraghi analyzed the substance used in Storro's attack and determined it was an extremely strong acid. He says Storro suffered second-degree burns and perhaps deeper burns. His goal during the surgery was to remove as much damaged skin as possible.
Nancy Neuwelt, Storro's mother, says her daughter bought a pair of sunglasses shortly before the attack, and that may have saved her eyesight.
Police have described the suspect as an African American female between 25 and 35 years old. She was reportedly wearing a green shirt and khaki pants at the time of attack. Her hair is described as either in a ponytail or slicked back.
According to investigators, Storro didn't know her attacker.
