HOUSTON— An audio recording taped during a reverse sting operation captured the final minutes of a slain HPD officer’s life.
The prosecution played the tape, recorded last June, for jurors in the murder trial of Officer Henry Canales.
The exchange was recorded on a watch microphone worn by Canales as he went undercover to sell TVs, said to be stolen, to catch crooks.
Roberto Carrillo, Andres-Nava Maldonado and Xiomara Mendez-Rosales met Canales that night, gathering around a rental truck parked in front of a Walgreens at Bellaire and Hillcroft. Negotiations led to a $6,500 deal.
But the deal went bad, and on the tape, Canales can be heard repeating what he believed was the phrase that would trigger backup.
Prosecutors say Carrillo and Nava-Maldonado then tried to rob Canales. On the tape, prosecutors say Nava-Maldonado can be heard saying "shoot him" in Spanish slang before an explosion of gunfire.
After that, Canales called for help in code one last time.
"It’s a done deal. I’m shot," he said on the recording.
Canales was able to return fire and hit Carrillo, who died at the scene.
After the shootout, some backup officers began pursuing Nava-Maldonado and
Mendez-Rosales while others tended to Canales.
Police said the officer was not responsive.
Defense attorneys claim Nava-Maldonado never said "shoot him" in Spanish slang on the tape and plan to call their own translation expert to testify.
Nava-Maldonado and Mendez-Rosales, both illegal immigrants, could face up to life in prison if convicted in Officer Canales’ death.
