I hear many people my parents age tell me that the golden era of this country was that time just after WW2 when they were all born up until most of them graduated high school, around the time the Vietnam war was coming to the forefront.
I wonder if their perception is skewed because its their childhood they're recollecting, or if in fact it was a better time. The immediate pros and con are:
pro: life was far simpler as a society with no cable tv, internet, or video games (which could easily be a con based on personal preference). People were perceived as far more respectable in public. Kids were seen and not heard and everyone dressed up everywhere they went.
con: racism and no civil rights/equal rights for minorities, lack of technology (think medicine/therapy for the treatment of disease).
I know my grandparents don't regale their childhood being as golden like my parents. They grew up on the heels of WW1, suffrage, prohibition, Progressive era (religious reform), the great depression, poor work conditions, and finally WWII. My grand parents paint a grim picture of hard times with hard work, neither of which produced much prosperity.
I just wonder if we as a country will ever return to that sense of patriotism and civility that our parents claim to have grown up with? I know we have a long way to go with equal treatment for all. Perhaps thats' the key to once again achieving the pipedream that was the "Golden Era"?
