  • Answer this question for research purposes Please!

If you had the extra $$$ to get a brand new camera what would you get film or digital?  Not for fish or tank shots just your choice of the two types.  I know about the differences of each this question is for research purposes only.

If you were going out today to buy a new camera ...

    Film or Digital?

I like Canon camera's because, my parents before me and I have only owned canon camera's.

If I was looking to get a Digital camera, I would pick the following

Price low  / picture quality ok / 100% bang for your buck - Canon Rebel XS
Price med / picture quality good / "low end prosumer camera - Canon EOS 50D
Price high / picture quality "through the roof" / high end prosumer camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II

            For film -- 35mm -- Canon EOS-1v

edited because I missed out the model number for the last digital camera

Nikon digital SLR is what I baught Girlgeek after about 8 months of research. No less than 10 megapixels. All the functionality and quality of film with no processing until we choose and what we choose. Also, no cost of film so you can shoot all you want.

This is the most important question. Once you choose digital over film, you still need to decide whether you want a point and shoot, or a digital SLR model. If you are going to get a DSLR, then that means you are willing to invest your money. If so, then I endorse Guygeek's pick: (Sorry Jesper!)

However, if you are going to get a point and shoot camera, then I recommend any of the Canon IS models. When used correctly, the IS (or Image Stabilization) in conjunction with the Automatic high ISO rating, will allow for most pictures to come out decently. If the the Canon IS models are too over-priced, then try the Panasonic Lumix models with OIS (Optical Image Stabilizer).

There is NO point getting a point and shoot camera without Image Stabilization, and at least 7 to 8 megapixels. Don't be romanced by LCD touchscreen, docking stations, or any other fancy features. Focus on those two!

                        Good Luck!

EDIT: I don't know what the DSLR's take battery wise, but if you buy a point-n-shoot, make sure you get a model that takes double A batteries! You'll thank me on your next vacation, recital, party, when you don't have to worry about charging that weird rectangle of a proprietary battery when you can just pop in two new double A's!!

                          Jeebus...

Canon and Nikon make GREAT camera's, but here is what reviewers say over and over again.
Nikon wins more often on the body, but Canon wins more often on the lens.  Both camera's are close..

Who should I choose you ask..  Goto a football (NFL) or Basketball (NBA) game and notice the camera guys who sit along the side lines.  The majority wear Canon equipment very easily recognized with the white "L" lenses that Canon makes.

Yes I know what many will say Nikon now make white lenses, but look closely and see that there is a red stripe around the lens.  This is a trademark of Canon.

Again I dont endorse either one but the one that I carry because I have used it "forever" and I prefer it over Nikon.  Again I going to agree with the Nikon people they make a better body specially in the consumer line..  Once you make it to the prosumer or pro line.. I think Canon makes as good a body as Nikon.

Nikon makes the ccd censor for MANY of the point and shoot lines of camera's including Sony..   They also make the ccd for the Sony A (SLR) line of camera's.  The sensor technology is better when it comes to their APC line than Canon, but Nikon have barely scratched the surface when it comes to the full frame ccd's of Canon.  This is why Canon leads the way when it comes to the full frame DSLR's....

Now here is the deal maker...  Since the body is the cheap part of the camera..  please... once you choose a body stick with it.. because you can change out the body, but lenses is what is going to cost you in the long run.  Once you have started on one system dont change..   The complete change over will cost you a ton of money.  :)
