  • Rain Water Harvesting

    Hey all,

I'm currently working on a project about water coservation. Well for my case it's on rainwater harvesting.
I'm trying to get a general understanding on the percentage of people that actually do or do not collect rainwater.
And please write the reasons why you do, or why you don't. and what do you use the water for if you do collect.
Or anything you have to say about this issue at all will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Andri

          Re: Rain Water Harvesting

actually it's not about fish. it's whatever purpose you use the water for.
          ie. lawn, carwash, flushing, etc...

but I assume you guys are not doing it then.?

                Re: Rain Water Harvesting

it wouldnt really save you a lot of money. Water only costs around $5 a thousand gallons to pump to your house and take away.

                  Re: Rain Water Harvesting

Water does not cost nearly as much as you are thinking..
In 2000 numbers $1.00 of water costs $10.03 to remove (I dont recall the numbers 100% but they are close) ie a grand total of $11.03 of your water bill.
Here is the catch.  The water/sewage company does NOT measure how much you push out your toilet and other drains in your house.. they measure how much goes to your house.
Which in short means when you water your lawn and dont use the sewage you are paying for sewage not for the water you are bringing into your home.

imo that is the argument, we are running our resources so fast that in near future water cost can multiple.

You are correct there.  other countries will start seeing conflicts over water during our generation.

                              Re: Rain Water Harvesting

In 2003/2004 I re-routed the raingutter down spout to a 55g drum to collect rainwater.  I keep about 6" of old oak leaves in the bottom of the drum and harvest 15gallons at a time for for use in my species betta tanks.   The wild mouth brooding bettas require verry soft acid water (pH < 6) and I did not have an RO system at the time.   The Betta Picta & Betta Flax that I raised in species comunity tanks won several international shows and I was awarded a 1st place plaque for small mouthbrooders by the IBC.

At the time I was living in Dickinson and surrounded by Texas City on the South, Chocolate Bayou on the West and Bayport on the North so I was very concerned about polution from the sky, but I had no problems.
And the drum provided plenty of mosqueto larva for live food for my growing bettas.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
