Re: Looking to buy a Pistol

I <3 my STI Ranger II

Carrying/concealing a full size pistol like this isn't really that hard.

I've been thinking about getting one of STIs smaller pistols.. maybe the escort.

PP -- DO NOT GET a Para PDA -- I have shot this gun and I was VERY unimpressed with it.  I shot my friends PDA and we all came to the same conclusion, practice seldom with it, because you don't want to have in your mind the near impossibility of holding on to the gun after one shot..  I would carry a compact rather than a sub compact any day of the week.
The two guns I have liked the best for compact sized weapons are the HK USP Compact, and the Sig Sauer 228/229.   Now there are several other great options out there, but over time I have not yet fired them.   I like Glock's for their simplicity, but because of the steeper angled grip I have problems with "pushing" the gun.  An issue I am sure I would not have if I lost weight.  (thinner wrist)

Re: Looking to buy a Pistol

jetchanic -- pushing means you are attempting anticipate the shot recoil by "pushing" the nose down.  This is a problem widely found with subcompacts (some more and some less) because you dont have much grip on the gun in the first place, therefore you will grip the gun a little tighter.  When gripping the gun tighter your most natural instinct is to "push" the gun.  The mechanics shows most people will end up "raising" the gun slightly with your arms, but to "compensate" your pointing  the nose a little down, which means the impact of your bullet in flight will be slightly down and you will hit your target lower than anticipated.

"The correct way" of shooting is "not" to anticipate the recoil and make the shot come to you as a "surprise" which means you have to be "relaxed" when shooting.  In an "intense" situation, its "difficult" to be relaxed which is why the above mechanics comes to light.

I have taught a few people to shoot in my time and without fail if you follow some basic rules when shooting (and I am not talking gun safety rules now) then you can without a problem hit over and over the 10 ring from 7yards and without fail inside the 9 ring at 15 yards in less than 3 hours off shooting/training.   I have seen people who could not hit the paper at 15yards, be able to shoot 20 shots hitting within the 8 ring each and everytime in 30 minutes of shooting and about 2-3 hours of prep work prior to hitting the range.

I am a Sig fan myself....bought the P250 as a 9mm...you can buy other barrels/calibres without having to buy a whole other gun. Small enough to carry, but fits the hand nicely. A friend who is w/ the FBI said he wouldn't carry anything uless it has Sig on it!

I got to shoot one of those saturday. It's the third gun I have ever shot in my life.

I don't know first thing about guns, except that I hate it when Mr. Torres points them at me. I can say this though, that gun was nice, it felt balanced. He had two clips with it, one type were some kind of hollow point and the other were his 'target slugs'.

If I were going to buy one, I would buy that one. Dunno what they cost but I'm sure it's worth it based on this persons description of it and how it felt.

I'm a revolver type of guy myself.  If I could get Freedom Arms to make a revolving rifle in .454 Casull I'd be in heaven.  If I could find a Colt Python in .41 mag I'd finance it.
