Dying hob filters

Ok what's the deal with the dying filters lately? I purchased 3 new HOB filters in the last 6 months. 3 different brands and they are all dying in the last 2-3 months. Given the HOB filters that I purchased 7-8 years ago are still running strong 24/7 just want to know what the heck is going on? Is it like everything else and they are not making things as good as they use too? I was sitting here reading the forum and my filter at work just went out. This is #4.  :?  Has anyone else experieced this lately?

yea me too.. i have a emperor 400 and a penguin 350 and they both seem to be dying out and stop sometimes.. ive cleaned them throughly and done everything i could but noticed that they also both look weaker now.. not as strong as when i first bought them..

Glad it's not just me.  Not that I am glad you are having trouble too. I just thought maybe I was going insane. lol

I have canisters on all my other tanks. And it's a good thing I did add the canister, about 2 weeks later two HOB's died on two different tanks after adding the canisters to the tank. It's just driving me crazy because I like to keep the Hob's on the tanks just in case I have to quickly set up a hospital tank. Now I have to go home and pull one off a tank to use here at work. Gggggggggrrrrrrrrrrr. :evil:

I have the eheim 2213, eheim 2227 & 3 rena xp3's. I pefer the rena xp3 over any other. It's super easy to clean, quiet and cost less than the eheim. For a 150 gallon tank I would probally get the Rena XP4. I have a 160 gallon and I put a rena xp3 on each side of the tank. You could do that but they just recently went way up in price. I know other people swear by the larger eheim canisters of the fluval 404 (I think), I never tried fluval so I can't say. I would post that question in the equipment section and get ideas from everyone and go from there.

I've had bad experiences with Fluval cannister filters and powerheads, as well as Walmart's Aquatec powerheads, dying in less than a year.

I have been having lots of power surges lately and I wondered if that has anything to do with it. Even though I have all the equipment on a heavy duty power surger. But with only the hob's dying I think it may just be considered junk. If not I should have have problems with other things, so that would blow that theory out of the water. Oh well! I wanted to convert everything to a caniser or sump anyway.

What fish you keep in the 150 ?  How much filtration are you looking for ?
Personally I have all Eheim filters, more expensive than most others, but they are also known as little work horses that will not die.

If you looking for a BIG canister look at the 2260 or 2262 -- these things are some of the biggest canister filters I know of.

There are several others out there, and I cannot give you much experience with any of them.
