      Re: Camping in Texas

The best scenic camping I've done in Texas was on the Brazos river about 2-3 hrs west of Fort Worth.  Real high cliffs, eagles, wildlife everywhere.  If you're interested in the actual location, let me know and I'll find out.  It's also a good beginner's river, and is the only river we ever did twice.

We used to go 1-2 times a year on 4-6 day river camping trips.  Most of the time out west of Austin (lots of rivers with lots of good scenery).  If you want to be alone, taking everything with you down the river is the way to go.  My friend who set these up has a book of Texas river camping trips ... if you'd like I can find out the name of the book.  It even tells you where to park your two cars (one where you put in and one where you get out), gives maps with locations of rapids, suggested camping spotes, etc... best vacations I've ever had.
