Hi guys. I'm new here. Just joined this morning. I'm glad I saw this thread cause my water bill just came in a week or two ago and I need some opinions. I do have a large family there's 7 of us. 2 adults and we have 5 kids so yes there is a substantial amount of water consumption. But $600 worth? I'm running a 90gal, two 72gals and a 30gal. I do 50% WC weekly on all tanks. But I hear of people that have way more tanks and pay half the water I'm paying. What do you think? Is this right or should I have someone check my house for leaks? I'm including a pic of the bill. The sewer cost is ridiculous. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1369223477.178211.jpg

$600 is crazy....There are 7 of us in our family too. Plus a pool, a small pond, a large garden, not to mention the 7 tanks up and running. 150G, 100G, 75G, 42G, 30G, 20G and a 10G. Last months bill was $75....and I emptied and filled the pool twice last month. May want to look into that one!!!!
          A mouth will say anything....:ym_chatterbox:....Take a picture!!!!

            Hi MrFlow! Welcome to HFB!

You might wanna talk to your utility and talk to them about that sewer charge, maybe there's an error in their system on how they calculate the cost there.

$470 just for sewer. That is crazy! I bet they messed up the percentages on your bill. Usually sewer is based on your water and is quite a bit lower.

Also, you can check for leaks by turning off all your water in the house and go to the meter. Most have a leak detector in the middle which turns slowly. There are plenty of vids on the net to show how this is done. It only turns when water is moving through the meter.

Go out and look at your meter. Look at the glass meter and see if the little needles are turning. Make sure everything is off in the house. If the needles are turning then something is using water. There is a valve before the meter that you can turn off to verify the meter stops turning. Some take a special T handle to close or you might be lucky and they in stalled a valve you can turn off by hand.

I was typing too slow, Brian beat me.

You guys rock! I'm gonna look into this ASAP. Last quarter was high and I just paid it and didn't think much of it. But this quarter was almost $150 more then last. So now it's hurting the pocket big time. I called a plumber (friend of my inlaws) and he's gonna come check everything out next week. Ill let you guys know. Thanks for all the help though I needed to make sure it wasn't the tanks.

My brother had a drip on an outside faucet. That alone cost him and extra $150

There's definitely something wrong with that water bill. I used 20K gallons last month and the breakdown is :

                            Sewer : $18.80
                            Water : $23.30
                            RWA (Solid Waste/Trash) : $38.50

                            For a total of $80.60

Ok guys so $200 bucks later the problem(s) are fixed. 2 of my 3 toilets were constantly leaking into the tanks. The plumber showed me how easy it was for the toilets to feel the need to refill. After switching some internal parts we should be good to go. So now I have to call the water company and beg a little. I'm told sometimes they will give you a break on your bill as a one time curtesy. Thanks to all of you for showing me that there was definitely something wrong and that it wasn't due to the fish tanks.
