  • Support the stoke!

So for a while I've been in and out of longboarding and just this year I've finally started to kick things into gear. Now as I go around skating I meet families and kids ect who are interested and/or are already into the sport but are very unaware of how just rolling down the street without a helmet is still pretty hazardous. I for one have had first hand experience with this and nearly snapped my neck.

This wasnt an issue for me until I recently went to my favorite spot to skate at SCP (spring creek park). these hills aren't fast but if you don't know what you're doing, you will get hurt and this particular day I went a lot of kids and people my age all with out helmets. Just the thought of one them getting severely hurt and the cops ambulance ect all come. News catches whiff of this and it's San Diego all over again and longboard would be considered a self hazardous sport and more then likely banned. Now please just for the sake of any sport, wear a helmet. Just the realization of the possibilities of what could happen is to great. Support your sport and be safe.

Great advice to a wickedly cool laid back sport/activity.

Last year we went out to SCP for a photoshoot that ended by the spot the longboarders/roller bladers use. We sat and watched for a good hour and there were a few crashes, but most of them were wearing their gear. Very entertaining to say the least! Somewhere I have videos... not sure where right now tho.

Unfortunately in these situations people have the "it won't happen to me attitude", but long boarding can be dangerous even if your just rolling around and not trying to do anything crazy. A kid at my wife's high school who was an all state swimmer, great athleticism and coordination, was skating on his longboard in his driveway and street when he feel and hit his head. Unfortunately it was the perfect storm that day and he is now a vegetable(sorry, don't know the technical term). He has been in the hospital on life support for almost 2 years. It's an extremely unfortunate accident that could have been avoided with a $30 helmet.

Yep. I'll be posting pictures and videos taken from the Austin race that was held today and I had a pretty nasty spill but still had a great time.
