  • For you gun enthusiasts! Question

I just bought my first gun - Bushmaster XM-15 e2s. It shoots beautifully! My question is - where do you go to get your .223 ammo? It's for pure recreation, target shooting. Cheaper the better - I used a few clips of Steel cased, but I'm going to start using brass from now on since I know a buddy you can reload ammo. Cheaperthandirt.com and Federal ammo seems cheap and lots of good reviews - are there any other places that I should look at?

Also: It's fun shooting down range - have my scope sighted in at 100yards for now. But the true potential of this gun definitely has to be tossing on a red-dot and running through some tactical/competition shooting courses. Are there any open to the public? I live up in woodlands. I was told there is one in conroe, but I can't find it - I'd be willing to drive to bw8 or 610 north side if need be.

    Thanks guys!

Yeah - I was warned about wolf ammo. Tried that real cheap Monarch steel case ammo from Academy today. Put 200 rounds through it this morning with no issues or stray shots. Obviously needed to clean barrel afterwards, but I'll probably clean it after every time out regardless of ammo that I use.

Are there any good sites to order the ammo from? Im looking at the lake city. I see mostly green tip and penetrator ammo, seems a little higher end than what I need them for. I'm just sticking with FMJ for now

Check out sportsmansguide.com they are located in Minn. They have great prices, and shipping is very reasonable.

Thanks guys! I've been searching for the last 2hours or so. I've come up with Federal AE223 55grain FMJ ammo - 100rd for 29.95/box, but the kicker is free shipping. Glensoutdoors.com

A few years ago these guys http://www.whidpa.com/ did courses of fire every so often with carbine & pistol. It looks like currently they do 3 gun competition (carbine, shotgun & pistol). You mentioned being concerned about cost of the ammo--so maybe you don't want to shell out another grand for firearms, but I bet if you contacted them they might know of most of the places around Houston that might be able to offer you a carbine course to go use your AR. If you are looking for decent quality range ammo, another brand to consider is Black Hills blue box, which is a commercially reloaded ammo.

Ammohouston or Collins ammo (CCC ammo) are both local guys. CCC makes their own stuff and ammohouston sells HSM ammo which is my favorite. No one knows much about HSM it's made in Montana and is quietly the 5th largest ammo maker in the us. it burns clean in my 9's. I'll be using it when i join the AR world next year.

Look for High Caliber gun shows. They are now holding shows in Conroe. One or both of these guys are usually there.
