  • Any plumbers on the box?

My wife got came back to the house last night, and smelled gas. She immediately called me to come home (she wasn't sure if it was actually gas, or something else). I called the gas company to see if they could find the source of the leak. They found it . . . two of them. Gas is currently turned off from the main line. So that everything can be worked on.

One is a leak by the gas nipple where it comes out of the wall and the other is a hole in a metal flexible tube. The tube seems simple enough to fix, but I can't fix the other one. I'd rather have someone who knows what they are doing fix everything.

Also, it was pointed out that the gas water heater that we have is not vented properly. Being able to fix this would be a plus.

If you can help (or know someone who can), let me know. I'd rather my money went to someone on HoustonFishBox than a complete stranger.

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Tim - You did the right thing by getting the gas turned off. Unfortunately, you notified the gas company. Most likely, your house has been "red tagged" and will have to undergo a complete pressure test of the entire home. This can be a complete nightmare for an older home. When this happened to me on my 40 year old home, I spent about $3,000 before everything was fixed to the City's satisfaction. If you have not been "red tagged" do not under any circumstance contact the gas company or the City. You can contact me and I will explain the specifics.

Go ahead and involve a plumber now. I don't have one to recommend. Plumbers "get it" and won't "red tag" you. They will check everything thoroughly without subjecting you to the 24 hour pressure test. The plumber can turn the gas back on unless the gas company has tagged you.

I wish I had better news for you and could be more helpful.

    Good luck.
