      Re: Have to rant....

      Right on, Nancy.

Since I'm not a newby anymore, I try not to go crazy, but sometimes...  Ask Richard or Marion about the ACA two years ago.  The stuff I bought almost didn't fit in his 350Z.

But if I really want something, I will bid until I get it or the other bidder(s) will pay well for it.  That's why it's an auction.  LOL

And it's still usually much cheaper than the LFS price.

        Re: Have to rant....

        wow-

guess I struck a nerve here.

Now let me answer/explain some things:

        1. I NEVER said anything was wrong with HAS- personally I'm very greatful for them organizing and excuting this- and that they are willing to do this 3 times a year- GREAT!  and I would join but I am moving before the end of the year... so another auction would not be money well spent.

        2.  I know people bid differently- that's fine- but MANY and I do mean MANY of the "sneak" bids were from 5 specific people!  I don't care about the random bid from the back or people discussing, I'm talking about those who did it EVERY FRIGGIN' time- on purpose!   Part of my hobby is watching people (most here watch fish, I do both)-  so I noticed who would bid what way.  And really my problem was with those specific people and their personal style-

        3. you're right I could have out bid them- and 3 times I truly tried- right up to my spending limit- and didn't succeed- and I admit that is my fault- hell check my post before I said that- doesn't make it any less annoying even if I had won (which I did for one of my auctions)

        4. I confronted this person because this person called me out in front of EVERYONE out loud!  what are you going to do when this happens?!  I personally was no going to bother this person ever, but when you call me out- I call back.

        5.  And I have no problem with those who bought multiple "copies" of the same item (be it fish, plants, etc) I understand you can need to get a few of the same things.  But there is a difference between needing something and...

        6. Buying items to just make a profit elsewhere!  Anyone is welcome- and it is COMPLETELY their right!  But Damn it I DON'T have to like it!  OR like the people who just...

        7. Want the attention or feeling of winning an auction!  If you think I'm wrong- had you sat there and watched the people themselves- you would have seen it in their eyes sometimes- and if you think I'm wrong- the kids showing the items- knew exactly which person to bring certain items to because that same person bought it EVERY time- and I'm not taking about just the guppies- but certain plants- and other certain items.  It became a joke to the kids too!  That's when you know it has become obvious! When you have a problem.

Again these are my opinions and you have the right to yours and I'm fine with that.  Like I said this is a rant... not a decleration that everyoen else is wrong and I am right!

        Okay rant II finished...

          Re: Have to rant....

Peace to the GatorRock, I am with you, it does get old when the same person buys everything, and if I am thinking of the same guy as you, that dude has a butt load of tanks and he hardly sells anything at the auctions. He always buys that much, that is the nature of the beast. When he showed up, my brother and I said crap, things about to get a little more costly. As for sneaky bidders, that is a crappy also, but when they do that crap to me, make just as mad as the next guy just becuase we have to go through the whole going once, twice, and that is when I chrimed in another bid just to see if they really want it or not. I am not what you call a sneaky bidder, however, if they do that crap on me, I will return the favor, if I want it I am going throw with the best of them, as like the  szidlon stated they are going to be paying a pretty penny for whatever it is. Damn, I missed them calling out, I must went to the truck for a drink, yeah, defend yourself, no doubt on that, I hope it wasn't anyone in my group. We do get alittle rowdy, but I don't think we go at anyone personally. I always miss the good stuff.

Buying things to sell somewhere else for little more $ later, I do it, along with about 60% of the people who are there. Whether it buying a breeders to sell babies later or rocks to post on ebay or whatever. Isn't that what an auction is for? That what car dealers do, resturant people do it, so why shouldn't we? This isn't a cheap hobby by no means, if I can pick up something cheap and sell it later for a few more dollars, I am doing that. My electric bill isn't cheap, my water bill isn't cheap, my food bill isn't cheap, my time is the only thing going for cheap.

Good rants... I enjoyed the read! Valid points and strong thoughts, no problems with that! Good stuff!

            Re: Have to rant....

            GatorRock,

I am the one who bought the guppies during the last 40 minutes of the auction.  To set the record straight, I bought THREE bags of female guppies for a total of thirty.  Got them for $3.  You must have not wanted them that badly.  I would not have gone higher.  I have 20 tanks with community fish.  They are all loving their new homes.

I am also the mother of those children who walked the fish up and down the aisle.  You are not a very good "observer of people."  They had no clue as to who would buy the item and if they where really interested.  They would show the item to anyone who wanted to see them.  According to them a lot of people looked but never bid on the items.

I hope he bids of some cichlids, especially on my cichlids, that wouldn't kill me to get an extra buck or two for my fish.

                    Sissy,
Tell the helpers thankyou  for all their work.

Do they have their own tanks ?  Or did you have to drag them kicking and screaming to the auction ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                      Re: Have to rant....

At the next HAS Auction we're going to unleash some secret weapons and new rules to make the Bidding easier.

                      They are:

#1 Supermodels (with XL breast implants) will be strolling up and down the isles showing off the merchandise in bikinis and high heels. (To Cichlidsooner and his entourage - you're bidding on an item, not paying for a Lap Dance)

#2 We will issue every Bidder an HAS Credit Card when they sign in. So buy all you want for as much as you want. No more getting outbid because of Budget Restraints. 33% DPR (Daily Percentage Rate) of coarse. We'll call it American (Fish) Express

#3 Professional Makeup Artists will come in and make all those Guppies look like rare exotic Cichlids.

#4 (For our Lady Bidders) Charles will play Auctioneer - in the nude!!!

#5 (For those of you not willing to pay more than 50 cents per Guppy) When one Bidder buys too many female Guppies - just before they load them into their car - we're going to drop one male Guppy into each bag and watch them drive off. By the time they turn out of the parking lot onto Rt 3 their car's bumper will be dragging on the ground. (They multiply rapidly - get it!)

#6 Binoculars will be issued to those Bidders seated in the last three rows. No more complaints that the 50 pound kid carrying the 60 pound holey rock up the isle didn't get to you.

#7 The use of deadly force will be allowed against any Bidder you feel is not using proper auction etiquette. This includes anyone who you think might not use proper etiquette. After all, who do they think they are!

                      and finally...

#8 Bidders will now be responsible for: a) finding and contracting an Auction Hall, b) setting up the tables and chairs at the Auction Hall at least one hour prior (along with everything else you have to do to get ready that morning. I recommend you get up before 5:30 AM to shower, bag fish, load Auction necessities, eat, etc., and that's if you only live 15 minutes away), c) locate a back-up loudspeaker system, d) ordering Auction Forms including Bidder Cards, Sellers Sheets, etc., e) finding dedicated people to work the Auction (a largely unrewarding job), and f) whatever else you can think of that it takes to put an Auction together. All this so that I can get MY chance to personally sit back and just BID, B*TCH and MOAN!!!

Can anyone think of any other secret weapons or rules to include?
TO BE, OR NOT TO BE ... was never a question!

                          Re: Have to rant....

i will say it again i wll go to one and see myself, and if i ever get the opportunity i will volunteer for one as well, (but again time permitting) so for those of us that have to work 3 jobs just to cover school and hobby (hence why im trying to breed tangs (figure they may make the hobby at least a neutral cost, hopefully) oh yeah and bills, give them a break. apparently someone thought i was there (i wasnt i was just stating i didnt like what happened to Gator, and i am very glad for all the people that got stuff they wanted. i have a feeling some of my plants would do very well there, but who knows maybe i come and not like it. it sounds like there are things that i will love there and some i wont, But i can say i will probably be more the rowdy type with cichlid sooner he is my kind of guy, but i do like the new rules  just kidding, maybe i make next auction, but sundays are usaully always bad for me, and when i said flyers or cards i meant just about the club not about the auction, maybe we get Ken to call or i will ask if some of the stores will put out Fishbox cards. I will ask at Fish Gallery when I go in on Thursday to get the 5 gallon tanks they ordered for me.

One comment,  If the kid whose been trotting bags up and down the isle doesn't get to me, I get up out of my chair and go to him, if he's holding something I interested in.  He/she is always glad to show it to me.

And thanks to the kids and their parents for letting them help us out!

                              HAHAHAHAAAAAAA  :emtthumbs:

                              Thanks, I needed that!

For a newcomer, it can be a bit frustrating for the lack of experience. I know I sure was the first time. That's OK. Come again! Next time you'll know what to expect and won't find it so frustrating. I have been frustrated on many occasions by my countless auction losses.  :(    I just try to remember that I don't really know what they NEED and don't NEED.

I'm embarassed to say that I got so caught up in spring break with my kids, that I FORGOT THE AUCTION until it was about 3PM!!! Talk about frustrating!!!! I really love that HAS puts on the auction and even if you guys didn't do a single thing other than that you would always get my support and I hope we can do more together. I have and still do volunteer work and I completely understand what it takes to put on the auction and I applaud you for it. Thank you so much.

I'm also thankful for everyone's involvement here. I love hearing the different opinions! That's what makes the world go 'round, no matter how frustrated we may be. Because, with a little frustration, comes a great deal of insight and knowledge which may not be had otherwise. On a personal note, I would prefer not to see personal critique(some may translate as "attack") without asking permission from the person in question. Life is too short and who know's, you may need that person to pull you out of a ditch later.

P.S. Tiapan, Thanks so much for your help. You are one of the few that goes out of your way to help me get the cards out there and I really appreciate that.
