Just wanted to revisit this thread since we are now starting to see at my work an increase of pets, both dogs and cats, having urinary infections due to crystals forming in the bladder. The cause of this is certain pet's inability to metabolize certain minerals in their food as well as having urinary pH that is usually alkaline, but sometimes due to overly acidic conditions. This issue is almost always linked to the pets diets that in the past past were cheapo diets like store brands/generics, Old Roy, Alley Cat, etc. NOW we are seeing many pets that have been on the newer expensive trendy diets including Blue Buffalo and many of the "grain-free" diets. Many of the TV ads are quite misleading on why you should switch your pet to one of these diets. If you notice your dog or cat urinating excessively, straining, or having bloody urine and accidents, seek veterinary care and take them off these diets. Before anyone makes the accusation, that Hills and Purina give vets kickbacks and that's why, etc. etc... my work no longer carries Science Diet or Proplan due to a Petsmart being just a few streets away. Just wanted to share my observations, being in the veterinary field and wanting to share this with you guys. If you decide to keep them on Blue Buffalo etc, just make sure to monitor their urinary habits. These crystals in the bladder can eventually form stones, which need to be surgically removed (EXPENSIVE!). If they are not removed, they can lead to urethral blockage and death. Again, before anyone starts throwing stones (no pun intended) I have nothing to gain out of this other than sharing information based on observation. Thank you.
