I'm using the Hero right now. I can tell you that Android with their 'always on' data is killing the battery life. Its the same with Palm and their Web OS. I had to limit my email retrieve to every 4hr to conserve. Other than that everything is great. I'd use the BB Tour over this but I need the better browser from Android.
I personally like the look and feel of the Hero more. The Pre has a superior browser and operating system in my opinion though. The Hero's 5MP camera sucks *** but using the on screen QWERTY is the best I've seen.

Yes, I would recommend the TP2 for what I use it for...mainly web browsing, texting, and light conversation use. I talk on a phone all day at work so I dont like to actually talk on a cell phone very long when Im home. The browser is excellent and using a stylus (included) helps click on small items without having too zoom in, like going to the next page in a forum.
The TP2 is quick, reliable, and other than a couple of email sync failures, I've had no real issues with the phone. The screen is big, clear, and bright. The keyboard is excellent and makes typing a snap. In addition, the camera and video functions work well which is a bonus I wasnt expecting. Overall, the phone is very solid and well built.
My one complaint is that the ear piece volume is a little too low for my liking, even when turned up all the way. There are a few mods that are supposed to help this issue, but I havent spent much time worrying about it honestly.
If you get the phone, you should register at xda-developers.com. Those guys really know what theyre doing. Lots of good cabs, mods, hacks, and free programs for that phone. It will change the way your phone works for the better and you will learn alot.
I remember I was in your position not long ago and I decided after researching that the TP2 was the best phone Tmobile had. I have no regrets and my phone works great. My previous phone was a Blackberry Curve...and the TP2 makes the BB seem like a toy IMO.
Good luck!

Get the "Taskiller" app. Its free and makes it VERY easy to kill all apps running each time you get done using your phone. It took me from under four hours to about 24 hours (depending on activity of course).
Also add a shortcut to turn your wifi and gps on/off. That will save major battery life considering the amount of time you actually need the GPS and depending on your access to wifi hotspots.

Not sure if the camera was updated from Hero to Eris, but I think the 5mp/800-ISO is pretty darn decent for a phone. Here are two examples I took last week:
I agree that the onscreen keyboard is the best I've used but found it (of course) to be better on the Motorola Droid running Android 2.0 compared to my HTC Eris running Android 1.5.
Mine.. (on the left) 1996. Back then you had to have a pager so that people could beep you, then you could turn your phone on and call them back. I remember in 1998 switching to an alpha-numeric pager, and then in 2000 getting my first digital phone from Nokia and finally ditching the beeper. )
