Hey guys! I was wondering if anyone on the box has been to Tokyo and if so might have some suggestions for me for things to do/see while I'm there. I'll be there from December 28 - January 5 for New Years. Roppongi is on the list, the hot springs, and the Tokyo Gardens. I've heard there is an aquarium there however that it is not the best.

Tokoyo is really nice, lots of English there. Once away from Tokoyo, only Yokohama has a lot of English, otherwise start learning kanji
I was only in Tokoyo for a few hours, I spent 2 weeks in Yokohama
Its a completely different world. Feels really weird because your taller than 90% of the population and you cannot make out one word. It is so nice to find a place and get so disconnected.
Got me addicted to sushi while I was there.
You will have a blast. Be sure to sign up for frequent flyer miles on what ever airline you got, the trip there and back just about earns a free domestic ticket.
The flight is really long, get a aisle seat, or window if you can hold it.

I lived there for three years. Two of my sons were born in Japan. I'd suggest taking the train to Kamakura to see the Daibutsu and the temples. The night life in Tokyo is mind-boggling. There are buildings where each floor is a different club, with different theme. Shopping in the Ginza can last your whole trip if you wanted. I really miss Japan and would go back today if offered.

I believe there is convenient train service to Kyoto or Nara. Both are old culture centers with temples, etc. ( I was amazed to see at one of them the three monkeys- see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil ; many hundreds of years old). It was difficult to find a lounge where english is spoken. There are very many small lounges- I think they are expensive (I was a guest). 15 yr ago, when I was there, personal safety -late at night- was not a concern.
Plan to travel by train; I expect maps are available on the internet. It is hard to imagine a rental car would be a good idea, bad traffic, wrong side of the street and road signs look more like puzzles.

Learning to drive in the right-hand lanes was the main difficulty I had when I left Japan and came back to the states...that, and trying to get in the car on the passenger side to drive.
