It all depends on what you are looking for.
Personally I like the .308 round or you can go with something like the 30-06. This will give you the stopping power needed for a longer range shot.
I would look for a good used rifle and get a good scope.
Have you looked at CDNN catalog ?

A .243 will bring down a white tail with the correct shot placement. My mother hunted with one for years.
I agree with Jesper, however. I hunted with a Rem 760 in .30-06 for years. Then I bought a S&W 1500 in .270. Awesome power in that round. For the last 6 years I've hunted with a Rem 700VLS in .308 cal. The .308 is the most ballistically coefficient round there is, which means it gives repeatable performance and accuracy. It is used by the military as a sniper round for that reason.
I would suggest spending many, many hours on the range with whichever rifle you buy. Your proficiency with your weapon and confidence in your shot placement will go a long way toward harvesting deer in stead of wounding and losing them.
MarkWhat are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

If you are shooting from stands over feeders, the .243 will be fine (my daughter has a single-shot youth model - shorter stock, and it will drop full-grown does at 150 yards, no problem). I use a 30-06, little better distance and stopping power. Agree with Mark, spend a lot of time at the range once you get something. Confidence you'll hit where you are aiming goes a long way to making a successful shot.
