I know its not for everyone, but the Houston Fire Department is still hiring a few hundred guys every year over various classes. They're trying to beef the manpower for an expected mass exodus in the next few years as the last large group hired in the early 80's retires.

Also, if being a Firefighter or Paramedic isn't your cup of tea, check the City of Houston Employment website for civilian job opening across all departments - from Fire, Police, Public Works, City Hall, etc.. I think its one of the largest employers for both downtown and for the Houston Metro.
