So, once again, I stopped off at Pruetts gun shop on the way home. This time around, I was looking at hand guns. The desert eagle is a monster, and somewhat expensive, so how about the glock 9mm I looked at and liked..?

What's everyones opinon on 9mm vs say, 45, or 40, or 38 caliber?

Suggestions and comments welcome...I will be buying something soon.

    Thanks

Personally when you get into caliber every swingind d#*@ is gonna preach the whole .45 thing.

I say whatever you feel comfortable shooting is what you should get. 9mm usually carries more rounds then a .45 would so....

.45 is a bigger projectile so in turn that would make a bigger hole.

There are ballistic charts and etc. That show smaller rounds do just as much damage so you take your pick.

Btw.... the DE.50 is not fun to shoot moreless try and conceal.

I liked the fact that the 9mm I was looking at came with 2 17 round clips. And the ammo was not too bad per box.

      Thanks for your input.

To me I like 9mm over any other round.. why, follow up shots.. I dont believe in the fact that if I am ever in the situation where I have to defend myself, that I will get the first shot off.. I am most likely going to return fire. With this in mind I am most likely not going to be calm and dealing with a non-moving target. I am going to be frighten, and its not the first shot that is going to matter.. its going to be the second, third and fourth shot I need to make sure continue hitting the target.. and simply said.. 9mm has more rounds to bring to the fight then a 45.. I definitively dont want be reloading at only 6, 7 or 8 rounds, down.. I want to reload at the about 15+ point..

I'm in agreement with you there Jesper, I like the idea of having two clips or close to 35 rounds compared to maybe 15 in a 45....

          any more?

          Again, thanks for the input...

May I ask why are you going to buy a gun and why a hand gun and not a rifle?

You want it straight or should I give a generic answer....I plan on having a variety of firearms if I can manage it. I'm also looking at shot guns and something like the AR15.

Not trying to thread jack but does anyone know where I can buy wax tip bullets?
Oh and my .02, 9mm...especially if you're trying to have a range of guns. I'd say the 9mm is a nice median.

It is less about caliber and more about shot placement...a range round in the right spot with a 9mm will have more stopping power than a 45 hollow point in the wrong spot...
Also, if you are gonna practice (highly recommended) 9mm is relatively cheap ammo. Getting something comfortable to hold and shoot is very important too. What may be fine for your hand may not work for fishlady's hand. I shot many different models before I settled on my 9mm Sig P250.

I prefer a .40 imo. It give you the best of both worlds.

Well then most all .22LR are wax tipped due to them being mostly lead tips to help from deforming I believe.

What are the state/federal regulation in case of buying a hand gun? Any paperwork, training?
