Fish Newbie, Looking for Advice.

    Fish Newbie, Looking for Advice.

    Hello all, complete newb here, both to the forum and to keeping fish.  Well, not complete, I did help maintain a couple of tanks for my aquatic science class in high school, but that was about a decade ago...  Anywho, I've wanted an aquarium for a long time but never really got bitten by the bug to do anything about it until recently.  I rescued a betta that was being used as a decoration at a company party (they were gonna flush the poor guy after it was over) and that started again.  I'm in the planning/saving stage now, either setting up a FW community or a fancy goldfish tank.  Just wanted to introduce myself and troll for some advice.

    What is a good LFS around the HW6 & I10 area?  I can see that the closest to me are Fishland and T&T south of me and Aquatic World and Leo's to the north.  I went in Fishland last weekend and I wasn't terribly impressed, but then I don't really know what to look for.  What are some warning signs to stay away from?  Also, I hate talking to employees in stores, but I am definitely going to need some help and advice from whatever LFS(s) I decide to frequent.  What stores have really helpful and most importantly knowledgable staff that can help me decide what to put in the tank, hardware and fish-wise?

    Hey DW....nice to have you join us....

    Andy is the owner at fishland, and he is a pretty good guy, talk to him about  your needs and if he has time, he will be happy to share his opinions with you.

    T&T is a good store as well....

    Aquatic World on Jones....new management and really nice guy running the place...Jonny...

    The folks here are really good about sharing their opinions as well...take your time ....make sure to do your own research on the tank cycle and fish keeping....there' so many good sites out there that will help you....

    Others may have some links to start you off in the right direction...

      First of all, Welcome!!  Glad to have you here!

      Second, thank you for saving the Betta...that's all I'm going to say about that...I could go off about the flush-happy people, but I won't.  :)

      And lastly, you are in the right part of town for great LFS!  I'm slightly South of you and consider myself very lucky to be in the part of town with so much variety.  

      You've got the 4 you mentioned, plus here are the LFS I frequent...
      - Houston Aquarium Warehouse on Murphy (great option if you decide to go with a community tank) - Plus, Dan is probably one of the easiest guys to talk to about fish and their needs.
      - Fish Ranch in Rosenburg (again, Charles has a wealth of information and equally easy to talk to)
      - City Pets off BW8 (lots of variety, but sometimes hard to get someone who's not busy to chat with)  Great store though!

      There are many more, but these are my top 3.  I know there are other's here who can tell you about their favs.

        Personally, I prefer a hundred little tanks (betta in each one) to One big tank.  
        But you have to decide what you want or you can't get there from here.  
        You will find that none of us know what we want eather. (I recently bought a very large aquarium).
        We are constantly adding a tank or selling a tank or taking one apart and re-landscaping it.  Selling some fish and buying others.
        Which means that if you wait long enough, you can get anything you want from other boxers that tried it and didn't like it.
        Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.  And we boxers cumulatively have a lot of experience.  
        And we'ld be happy to share with you.

            Hey welcome to The Box!

            I'm new to this site and I still feel new to fish keeping, though I'm learning everyday. I also got into fish when I took an Aquatic Science class in High School. These guys know everything. You are in the right place!

              I agree with everyone above -- thank you for saving the Betta :):):):):)

              CF did a good job telling you about the locals here..
              Fishland :)  Awesome place to go get hardware from locally...  T&T if you ever get into SALTwater.. he IS the place in two to go get your stuff from.  Paul and his crew know more about Salt than anyone else in town I think.  Fresh water they are a great resource too.
              With Traci's suggestions I would also add Xtreme Fish and Pets located on Bellaire near Wilcrest.

              What interests you ?  PP is the man when it comes to Betta's if you want to keep them, talk to a champion breeder, he is one of them !!  (he has a wall of just his winning plaques -- just ask him.. he knows a ton on Betta's

              Post questions because we have a wide variety of people here.  Those who keep community fish all the way to those who keep very exotic fish and plants.  There is a ton to learn and we share with everyone :)  Welcome to a new life with the box :)

                  welcome to the HFB.....you have definately landed in the right place for advice, chit chat, controversy, great deals on fish and non-fish related items in the fish market, plus tons of information.....and a hand when you find you need one ....
                  cichlidfan gave you the one's that i like the best on our side of town....
                  Traci is right when it comes to Dan at AW....he's very friendly and knowlegable about fishkeeping....and will help you out on lot's of things....he's a really nice guy.....and carry's quality fish in his store.....
                  so belly up to the fish tank and ask away.....there are very smart keepers of fish on here ready to help.....

                    ALL - Thanks for all the great feedback, it's good to know that I have a lot of choices for quality LFS close by.

                    The only store I haven't heard anything back on is Leo's.  After checking out their site, it looks like it's more a setup/maintenance service place than a typical LFS, but it is on the map here so I thought I'd ask.  Doesn't look like anybody has any feedback one way or the other, though.

                      I live about 10 minutes north of Hwy 6 and I10. Nothing up this way (except Fish R Fun at Senate and Eldridge). My favorite general LFS closest to us is City Pets though it is a bit southeast of you at Beechnut and the Beltway.

                        Leo's is located inside of Trader's Village Flea Market.  He is a knowledgable gentleman that carries moslty bread and butter fish. Dure to the fact that he is inside the flea market, I haven't been there in a couple years. His stuff always loked healthy when I lived on that side of town though.

                          i've been in Leo's a couple of times....not alot to choose from....he mostly carries tanks....
                          if your really wanting to see variety then i would suggest you check out the one's mentioned and don't waste your time with Leo's at this point.....not to say he's not a nice man ....he is at that....just not alot of fish stock in his flea market operation....
