  • I'm Back!

Wow. Well, here I am again, lol. Hi everyone! Life has a way of making it damn near impossible to chat or to even be a dang lurker! I know it's been a few months since I've been on, so I wanted to say hello again & tell yall some exciting (to me) news. In February I partnered with an established broker out of Austin & have been busy establishing my independent insurance office here in town. That alone has kept me slightly busy! On top of that, one of my older sons moved back home & my hubby, Scorpio, got him a job where he works. That new (again) family dynamic had to balance itself out, as well. Also in February, we took in one of his friends. So, we went from being a family of 3 to a family of 5, lol. That's still working itself out. It's a process but it's working out fairly well.

Now, on to the fishies (and boy have they grown)! When I first joined back in September, we had just purchased 2 baby oscars, a dragonfish, & a baby pleco (in a 75g). We got 2 demon fish (black-banded leporinus), 2 parrots & 2 kissing gouramis (in a 39g) from a fellow boxer shortly thereafter. We also had a 55g with my son's GSP's, Nicole & Jackson. Well, we still have ALL of them, save 1 of the demon fish who lept to his untimely death about 3 months after we got him (even tho the tank lid was on). Before I got too busy to post, we also migrated the parrtos into the 75g & they've really calmed down since they don't live with the demon anymore. Those things can REALLY jump!

About 3 weeks ago my husband moved his boss into a new house. As payment, his boss gave him a 180g Sealife Systems acrylic tank complete with stand & canopy. Today, about noon, we decided to take a trip out to Fish R Us just to see what they have. It's a good sized place (100 feet long) & they have tons of fish & a separate salt water room, too! Since we have this 180g we have some decisions to make! We settled on moving the 2 oscars, dragon, pleco, parrots, gouramis & the demon into the 180g.

Jason (super nice guy) at Fish R Us told us we should be able to put demon & the gouramis in the tank with the oscars without issue & move the little puffers from the 55g into the 39g. When we got home, we did & so far he was right. The demon hasn't freaked out once since we moved him. I'm so happy! That also freed up the 55g which we are going to turn into a community tank. So far, we've decided on blue cobalt angels & we dunno what else yet. We're open to suggestions!

That decision to move the demon & the gouramis into the oscar tank led us to an 8 hour "fish day". After we moved everyone to their new homes, we decided to attempt to set up the 180g. Having no knowledge of a wet/dry filter system, I was thinking this wasn't going to be an easy task. Thank goodness my hubby was a plumber for 10 years! One trip to Home Depot & he whipped that thing back together like it was nothing. My little heart went pitter patter. *proud moment*

So now it's 10pm & we're beat! I have a short want list to complete moving everything around so I'll be posting in the wanted section, also. I wanted to share some pictures of the babies, now that they're a few months old, too.

    Here's the 180g

Oscars, one of the parrots (the other one likes to be inside the volcano), and one of the kissing gouramis

Welcome back. I’m thinking dwarf ram cichlids or the similar and a little easier to keep Bolivian ram cichlids, might go well with your angelfish. Avoid really small fish like medium and smaller sized tetras, because as the angelfish get larger, they will probably gobble them up. The big new tank looks impressive. If this is your first acrylic tank, please be aware that they are much easier to scratch than glass tanks. You should go get special algae scrapers made especially for acrylic. If you are using the Mag-Float type (the ones meant for acrylic are light blue) be extra careful not to trap gravel between the cleaner and the acrylic. If you are looking for some items, there is the GHAC auction going ahead tomorrow at 11:00am at ADG (288 and Beltway 8). Sparticus eh? Good name, goes with the Fall of Pompeii theme nicely!

Thanks for the advice & the compliment on Sparticus! It is our first acrylic tank & being that it's used & then stored in their garage for heavens knows how long, it already has it's share of scratches. Not too bad, but without a light, we can't really see yet. Hopefully someone comes through on my wanted post. Nick told me of the auction tomorrow and we had intended on going, but we spent our extra on setting the beast up today. If Nick needs a ride, I may go anyway but maybe next time we can prep a little better.

If y'all are a little handy, and don't mind the drugery, you can buff the scratches out. I've never done it but a search should turn up a bunch of instructions for you.

And you may--or may not find suitable lights at the auction.

Welcome back! That is a nice looking tank.
              Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

                      Welcome!

Regal Plastics should have the supplies you need to remove scratches from acrylic.

Welcome back. that is a great tank. pretty fish...
as for what you can put with angel. I'm not sure how big yours are but I have neon tetras in with altum angels also blue rams. they don't bother the angels and the angels don't bother them either.
                        thanks for sharing

Thanks, Troy! We are making a list & then picking what we want. So far, all we've decided on is the cobalt blue angels. Research is tobe done on what lives nicely with them. Who knows, they may not get big enough for hubby's liking. He likes BIG which is funny cuz I'm really little, lol.
