  • Injured Fish: what to do

i have a 4in necktie severum that got stuck between the lace rock and glass last night and must have struggled for a while cause one whole side of his scales are gone and his fin on that side is broken up as well. what should i do. should i remove him from the tank or just let me try and make it in there?

I'd remove him from the tank and isolate him if you can, treat him with a bit of salt, anti biotics of some sort and you might wanna even raise the new tank water to about 80 or so....You might want to PM maruader_77XXX and ask him for the kind of antibiotic to use. (he helped me with this question once)

I had a Oscar with similar injurieswho made a full recovery.

    Good Luck

      I agree with CichlidFan.

      Isolate if you can.

      StressCoat

Wherever you put him, make sure the water quality is VERY good and he'll be better in no time.  Watch for any white puffs indicating infection.  I'd wait on using antibiotics unless you do see any redness or white puffs (looks like cotton).  Melafix and Pimafix are good, mild meds and wouldn't hurt to use them, but if you see the areas getting infected, erythromycin is a really good antibiotic for that.  Mardel Maracyn contains Erythromycin.  They sell it at Petsmart and most LFS.

          isolation tank
clean water - change daily if possible
add almond leaf (betta breeders remedy for anything)
          or melafix / bettafix
Fungus stop or other fungus prevenative med is useful.

If more than a minor injury you may apply a bit of 2% Mercurochrome.
Slightly acid water should speed recovery (pH 6.6)

separate him and start dosing with melafix... the melafix will prevent  him from getting infected.

keep his water nice and clean and he'll be better in no time!

Dude, don't get too freaked out. It's a fact of life, fish hurt themselves. Our 27 inch giraffe cat hurts himself often. He is too big to move and isolate.

If you can move him, great. Do so. Add Epsom salt to the water. Keep the water changed at least 50% every 2 days. Watch close for infection (white puffs). If he starts to heal over the first couple days... Woo Hoo! If he starts looking worse, dose with whatever Charles at Fish Ranch in Rosenberg recommends. What you dose with will depend on what the symptoms are but if there are no symptoms... Epsom salt.

              Just my opinion

If I can't pull him out should I medicate the tank he is in now with my other fish

Yes you can, just more the effort with a larger tank.  There is a possiblity of stressing some of the other fish.  What else is in the tank?
