  • Topfin Tanks

I recently had to replace a leaking tank. Looking around I found a good deal on a topfin tank with everything in it including hood, lights, heater and filter. I figure I am going to have to budget for another filter in not too long, but what about the rest of the equipment? I've occasionally heard bad things about the topfin tanks but never any specifics. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on these tanks before I stick all the fish in it.

    Thanks!

House brand of the big petstore chain.

IMO not nearly as nice as some of the other brands but if its in good condition it should hold water fine.

        Re: Topfin Tanks

When I started going through the box I discovered something interesting.

The tank is branded all glass.

The filters is branded everywhere tetra whisper, except the top which is gray and says 'topfin'

The lights are perfecto, which doesn't ring a bell, but the bulbs are eclipse.

The food that came with it (hey! free food) is tetra.

All in all its actually a mixed bag of stuff, none of which is topfin brand.

Now the most important part....more room = more fish

The different manufacturers make the stuff so that Petco can label it with their label. The Walmart power filters, for example, all used to be Marineland.

            Re: Topfin Tanks

hey go easy topfin is PetSmart not petco. and your right its just a house name on another manufacturers product. mostly its the cheaper less powerfulk version, and a lot of the time like with marineland stuff they take off the bio wheel to make manufacturing cheaper. its all cheap plastic and low power pumps, but they arent very easy to make yourself, unlike fish freaks home made wet drys, im thinkin of those for any future large tanks. but the tank should work fine, especially the smallish ones. dont think they label anything over 75/80 gallons with topfin.

I always get the two mixed up in my mind...my apologies to all the fish professionals at Petsmart and Petco....and let's throw Walmart in for good measure! And yeah...it's pretty hard to build anything that large with 3/16" glass

Yeah I can't diffferentiate the two for the life of me.

I know I was told one sold saltwater stuff while the other doesn't and one sells birds or something while the other doesn't.

I had a 44 gallon topfin tank that my cousin now has, it's over 10 years old and never had a problem with it. Got it from petsmart. I also have 29G, a couple of 10G's topfin tanks all from petsmart.
