  • So im bleaching my rocks for the first time. Quick questions

So i got to tote buckets one half filled with bleach and the other i will use for water.

First question, how long do i leave the texas holey rock in the bleach? Second, How long to i leave it in the water? Third, Do i have to have new water constantly flowing through the tote or just fill it up and change the water after every new rock i put in it.? Finally, How long do i let them sit in the sun?

I'll just add this in here for now, but after the hurricane my brother fish all died only the pleco's survived. He gave them to me because his job requires him to be out of town months at a time and wasn't going to be able to give them the attention they need. So i have two 6 1/2 - 7 inch pleco's that will offered for a few bucks.

put the rocks in a bucket filled 1/2 way up with water. add 2 or 3 cups of bleach. soak rocks over night or 24 hrs. dump out bleach water and refill with fresh water. add triple dose of declorinator. soak over night. pull out in the morning to dry in the sun for a day or two. should be good to go.

Ok, just to save myself some work. (Dont have an excuse other then im busy this weekend) Can i have one tote full of the bleach water and the other dechlorinator water and just keep using those for my six texas holey rocks? Kinda like going in a line process.

Yes, but the bleach solution will get weaker over time as will the dechlor solution.
So add a little bit more dechlor with each rock and if the bleach solution isn't doing the job make it a little stronger.

This would be a good use for HYPO......  didn't someone on the north side of town just purchase some ?
To make De-chlorinator concentrate (zip drops)
Mix 1 tablespoon of Sodium Thiosulfate (HYPO) in a pint (8 oz) of Water.
Add one drop of the solution to each gallon of water to remove 3.75ppm chlorine.

If you want to wait on the snail mail, PM your address to me and I'll mail you a whole tablespoon of it on monday.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I have no idea what HYPO is, or what it does.

The most important things is that once you have rinsed off the bleach in the clean water let them SUN DRY for a couple of days.. this ensures that all the bleach will be gone off the stone.

i did this also, didnt do the dechlorinator just let it bake in the summer sun for a couple of days. Either way just make sure that rock is free of bleach by the time it goes inyour tank.
oh that........ thats just my 300 gallon fish tank, nothing fancy.

I'm so glad you wrote that- I though they were only put in the sun for some cosmetic reason, to make them look better- LOL.

The heat of the sun will warm up the stone enough to ensure that all the small holes and everything else has completely dried out.  This is to ensure that the bleach which evaporates in the sun is gone off the stone.
