  • Freshwater Stingrays

Ok ...I just learned that there is such thing and was very fascinated by the thought of this.  I have learned the are very calm and require a tank with a sand substraight.  PH levels are comparable to keeping cichlids. Feeding is brine shrimp etc.

I guess I am asking what if anyone has more insight or information on them.

    Thoughts or opinions please!!

    Re: Freshwater Stingrays

I saw several at Fish Gallery -- they looked good.. but I am going to have to think tank size here...

Delock's tank foot print of 7ft by 2.5ft would be a MINIMUM, and realistic size is more in the neighborhood of 8-10ft by 3ft deep.   Thankfully, no more than about 25in of water is need above them, but they would need to have a lot of turning room as they get to be rather long with their tails :)

    Just my two cents.

I'm with zulaab...I looked into getting some about a year ago. I didn't have the space for the tank they needed.  :?

            Re: Freshwater Stingrays

I have to wonder about the 125g tank that is right behind the counter in the center of the freshwater section at Fish Gallery.  This tank has several, I believe I counted 5 or 6 of them for sale at $125 I piece (I think dont kill me on the price).

I am going to agree with EK and Jughead...   I would be contacting Texas Wild Life and triple verify that I was not about to make an illegal purchase.

              Re: Freshwater Stingrays

well those are the ones that i saw today at fish gallery.   made me stop and think. I spoke to them for a bit and they said there are a bunch on the endangered list but those are not. I am sure that with fish gallery being a large company...that they would not risk an issue with it being against the law.

I was thinking just one or two in a 135 long    which was bigger than what they were in . not sure if thats ok or not but???

                Re: Freshwater Stingrays

they arent illegal because they are endangered, the state doesnt want you to release them when they are 18" dia. and no one will take them off your hands.they may fit in your tank now,but they wont for long.an adult will need a 4 by 8 foot tank min.if they are true freshwater fish from south america, they are illegal.if you got to have one, find out the exact species and do some research.i've never heard of a dwarf stingray.good luck.

                  Re: Freshwater Stingrays

The problem is these along with several others are capable of surviving in the local waters.....that is why they are illegal.

But if you are set on getting one I would probably get something deeper then your std. 135g.

                    Re: Freshwater Stingrays

thanks EK and everyone for the input. I will steer away from this as I have no room to keep them. I dont want to be one of those guys that just thinks about myself.  I try to condsider all aspecst of the hobby and how every choice I make has an impact now and in the future.
