            Jeebus,

Your Malawi and Tanganyika will like having a little current in the tank.  This is also one of the reasons I told you to setup your 2217's this way, one allow a current to exist and also allow for a strong enough water movement allowing for circulation which will bring your "crud" to make it back to the pickup in the back corner where your exhaust is located at.   If you keeping smaller amazonian fish I would tell you to use both spray bars washing against each other across the surface located on each side of the tank.

Pool filter sand (I bought mine from Leslie's pool supply @ $9.49 / 50lbs bags) is heavy and since its VERY clean you will not have to wash it when you get home, and it falls straight down and does not get suspended in the water unless some of the finer stuff.   This is why I love pool filter sand.

Did the tank come with lights ?  If not then I would contact Delock -- he had the last time I saw him still have some dual bulb 48" lights that would work well for you for a low price.  Install new light bulbs in the fixture and you would be a VERY happy camper there.

Did your tank come with tops ?   Since you are at west oaks area, go see Andy at Fish Land.. he has glass tops for 90's in stock.   He has a local manufacture who makes Oceanic sized glass tops for about 1/2 the price.    He is the one I bought my tops for my 75 Oceanic (which is same foot print of a 90)

I hope this will help, but I have a feeling since its already 1pm you guys have already left on your shopping trip.

            Post pictures !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: What equipment do I need for a 90 Gallon Freshwater Tank

Okay okay... we're back. I swear, after today, I'd rather go clothes shopping with my wife at the Galleria, on Christmas Eve, for 8 hours - versus the trek we made today!

Before I go any further let me correct myself from earlier that I did not get two (2) Eheim 2217's. I got a brand new 2215 complete with media and all tubing, and a barebones 2217. I just over looked the fact that the one in the box was a 15 and not a 17. At 300 dollars for the Oceanic tank, stand, and 2 Eheims, I still think it was a steal.

With that being said, we needed to fill out our bare-bones 2217 and get all the parts for it. Well, we didn't have to go that far. We went over to Xtreme Fish and paid Truong a visit. He hooked us up and gave us all the missing parts, tubing, and a good deal on media to fill it out. We also bought about 55 pounds of nice "holy rock" with generous sized holes in them.

No, the tank did not come with covers. We debated on going with the local brand, but since we got lucky and landed the Oceanic setup, we went ahead and got two Oceanic tank glass covers. We were also kinda cautious of the rough finished edges on the local brand.

As for a light, Truong hooked us up with a 48" dual bulb Oydessea fixture and swapped out the basic bulbs with two custom bulbs (a 12k and an Actinic).

We decided to stick to the Aragonite and as I type this my wife is cleaning the first batch for installation. What a great woman! lol.. We were just too weary of sand after dealing with the sugar-sand in our 30g. I've watched many a cichlid go to town on the Aragonite, so I think they'll be happy.

The only thing I wasn't able to get was the Shepherd's Bend outlet tube. Truong was able to re-quip my 2217 with all its original parts so for now I'll install a spray jet where the tube would go, and later look for the upgrade. FWIW, I went by Fishland and they didn't have one either. This will probably just be an internet purchase..

Oh, I went by Home Depot (I prefer Lowes but there are none close by), got some liquid nails for the rocks, and 4'x2' egg crate light diffuser. I've already cut it down to size and it is accepting the first of the Aragonite as I type this.

With all that said, I'm uploading the first few pictures here of everything before installation. Once I start installation, I'll post those pictures in a new thread titled "Building our dream 90 Gallon Cichlid Tank!" (or something to that nature..)

Edit: Here's the link to my flickr page. If someone wants to embed them here, then thanks!

Liquid Nails products resist water penetration. None of our products should be used below the waterline or immersed in water for long periods of time (i.e. pools, aquariums).

i got that off the liquid nails website....msds sheet...... 8O

                        Jeebus,

Did you end up with 2 spray bars then ?  The Shepard Crooks are not the easiest thing to get, but Truong could have ordered them.  Sometimes City Pets @ Beechnut and Beltway-8 have them in stock.   After you install them you will forever never want to go without them when you have a spray bar setup.  I have even had professional aquatic people install a 2215 without it, and within a month I bought one because again even with the professional doing it, it started to bend down and well, I just dont like it when the spray bar is not perfectly level across.

Congrats on all the stuff :)  You will be so happy when its all up and running.  I love the pictures you have on Flckr.  Looks great :)

I dont know about the liquid nails, so I am going to tell you listen to others... hehe :)

Cant wait to see pictures of it up and running :)

I'm gonna take the advice on the liquid nails. I bought some aquarium silicone sealer as a back-up. So I'll just use that. As for the Shepherd's crook, I'll just order one. For now, I'm directly venting my 2215 output right into the tank from the tube. I'll be posting pictures later tonight.

i'm glad you didn't use the liquid nails....it is a sure fire way to kill the fishies....
the aquarium silicone is good but next time you might want to try just 100% silicone ...it's safer on the fishies.....
but i'd like to ask you just what are you doing with the silicone in the first place?....holy rock is pretty heavy and sets well on the other pieces...i've never had to glue them down if that's what your doing?

You should have gotten the two part epoxy sold for Saltwater/reef tanks instead.
