Re: I have rusty looking spots on my decorations

Ellen, I sorta thought that was what you were talking about.

Is it okay for me to stick my arm in there to wipe it down? Of course I know I shouldn't have any lotions on, but is it better to get a pole, tongs or something long rather than use your arms? Or is that just a waste of money? I think I could go broke with this tank if I don't watch out!

If it's on the glass, you can use one of those algae remover sponges on the long plastic stick.  Those work pretty well, but you have to keep going over the spot.  Also, they have the magnetic glass cleaners that keep you from having to stick your arms in the tank.  They're really great for short people with deep tanks.
Reasoning with some people is like trying to nail jello to a wall...

You described me perfectly - a short person with a deep tank!

Ditto on the glass cleaner magnets. Well worth the money!

Brown Algea is running rampid in my tank right now.

I'm also short, that's why they make step-stools!

I stick my arm in there. Wash your hands and arms. Then rinse your hands and arms really well, make sure there's no soap residue. I do it during a water change. While the water's low you can wipe away any algae and not have to worry about sloshing water out of the tank. On my nano-reef, though, I never stick my hand in there; I've heard too many stories about the bacteria in the live rock for that!

I have an algae scrubber on a stick, it wasn't very expensive at Wal-Mart, but I really prefer to use the paper towels. The scrubber takes more effort (for me), and then I always end up missing spots.  :?

The tank is looking great. I got a magnet cleaner, and 2 O cats. The brown spots haven't spread anymore and the fishie boys are happy, active and healthy. Water tests are good and I am tickled. With the help of a friend I got a few plants in there to help the situation, and it is looking good.

Now if I could only figure out a way to photograph it for everyone to see . . .  :?
