Best store for plants?

Hello,

I am looking for the local shops that carry a good selection of plants with decent prices. I order from bobstropicalplants.com but it would be nice to find something local. Any favorite places to get plants around Houston? Also if you know anyone who breeds plants and sells them here on the forums please let me know also!

Uh... Breeding plants? There are a lot of members here who grow plants. Just post a wanted thread for what you want. For lfs, there's some but the selection is weak or they're expensive. Fish Gallery had a nice selection. City pets, HAW, Xtreme, and a few other stores in the sw area. Petco and petsmart also has a decent selection.

Fish gallery is where I got a good hunk of Java fern but it was pricey. Petsmart is good for plants but nevvvveeerrr get the ones out of the tanks unless your feeling extremely lucky and are willing to wrinse the hell outta them. Even fish gallery had snails but I have Cory's and rinsed like hell too! But Petsmart has plants that they sell in plastic tubes so you can see through them and look at all the leaves and tthey are usually hit or miss unless you go like Thursdayish after they get the new shipment in those are good that's where I got my swords and Nana and mossballs. They are kept in like a clear gel that's like flavorless jello so the moment you drop them in your tank they take off with growth and should be snail free its written on the tube I think. They also sell tissue culture plants I think they are called like the dwarf hairgrass and such.

I've been doing my plant shopping through other hobbyists. You just can't beat the variety and the price. Got a huge plant package for $20 that was enough to completely fill in a 10g.

+1 honestly its hard to beat local hobbyists. Usually oddball stuff you see in a store and never in a tank is for a reason, it craters in our normal water. With hobbyists they have been growing them for awhile and you can garner what works and does not. They can tell you growth rates, behavior, photoperiod, supplementation needed, ect. Many stores have just gotten them in and they occasionally do well and occasionally do not. Many of the planted tank keepers have a collection of what worked and can spare a wide variety for folks to try out and see what they like. I always prefer hobbyists in that regard.

That's definitely true but I just joined the zforum so whenever I want to restart or start other tanks this is where ill go!

I'd recommend The Planted Tank swap n shop forum for plant purchases. There's a vast variety that you can't find in stores that can be found there.
