  • Instant cycling a new fishtank

is it possible? I have purigen, established filter, established gravel, lots plants, established filter media. My nephew made a crack on the 12 gallon fluval edge. So my 45 gallon project will have to come and finish this weekend. I hope I'm not too late. I'm planing on trying to instant cycling my 45 gallon tank by running the old filter along with the new canister eheim 2215 in my new tank. anyone have any other idea? I really dont want to lose any fishes especially my pretty betta and the delta guppies in the fluval edge (somehow my betta got a long with the guppies)

    simple as that!

I don't get caught up with all the cycling/testing waters/adding mumbo jumbo stuff.
Every time I do stop and try any of it is when the problems begin.

I cant say I even remember the last time I gave enought time to cycle a tank. I generally set up everything from scratch and add fish 2-8 hours later. Havent lost one doing that in 10 years. but im not saying everyone can do the same.

            Agree with what EK says.

If you're not 100% comfortable doing it like that, the only thing I'd say to do is to add Seachem Stability per directions on the bottle. I've set up heavily loaded tanks from scratch with it with no fish loss.

If you have established filter media don't even think about it. If the media is established then you are already cycled.

+1 to going for it with established media. bettas are really tolerant to cycling anyway but you shouldnt have a problem. to be safe you could do more frequent small water changes but it probably wont be necessary unless you add more bioload to the system right now.

Well my new tank will have approximately 12 fishes about almost 20 inches of fish, I also have 2 assassin snail and 2 nerite snail, so far the AC20 was able to sustain that bioload, I'm moving that AC20 to run along with the new eheim filter in the new 45g tank, I hope that will be enough.

On a different note, does anyone have java moss, taiwan moss, or xmas moss they can sell? I'm gonna do a moss carpet. I dont know which substrate to use for a moss carpet.

If all of the substrate, pump, filter etc are all established, there is really no need for the long cycling process.. cycling is over rated. When I set up my 150 gallon I used all of the equipment (pumps, filters, substrate, heaters plants etc... from my 2- 75 gallon tanks and had it up and running that night. All fish did well and no corpses floating and that was about 4 months ago LOL

i wouldnt say that cycling on a new system is overrated. you arent actually 'cycling' if you are transferring established filters, media, plants, etc from two 75s to a 150. Try that with clean gear and load it up and you might have problems, depending on the fish.

That is true totenkampf, when setting up a new tank with new equipment... But the poster was asking about a transfer of established equipment into a new tank.

I just did a compleat clean on my 75g. This morning. Everything in the tank was removed. Tank was cleaned and nothing but water and all my little fish put back in. I cleaned the filter also. But with the tanks water. Tonight still clear...
                              So it can be done.
good luck with the move. It will go well if you plan well...
