I try not to buy anything from those places. It's better to support LFS. However, I suspect that like others have stated it's probably a corporate thing. Maybe they did have some bad experiences with animal rights activist.

both petco and petsmart have had run ins with PETA, Petco more so, thats why they cant carry large birds anymore. Now if only petsmart would stop getting animals from Rainbow exotics (thats their local supplier for birds and small animals), the world would be a better place.

I buy most all my fish and plants from local fish stores, my wife was just there to buy some dog food. Like me she can't go to a pet store without looking at the fish though (she is a marine biologist by degree). She saw some angel fish, and I have been talking with her about stocking the big tank with angels. She wanted to show me the color pattern she liked and see if she should buy them or if I could find some like it. I understand corporate rules, but a sales person should also have some common sense and be able to determine a harmless customer from a spy. Not to mention, if you can't stand behind your product or your prices then you got something wrong.

I've never had such problems and I take pictures of anything I find funny or what not.

I took several picture of sulawesi snails/shrimp/etc. at the one in spring to post on here and no one cared.
I think I've taken several pictures and so has my brothers to send via cellular, I don't care for most of their livestock but do like their sales and the prices on Amquel which is what I buy frequently from them.

I wouldn't stand for rude behavior though and that I would have got obnoxious and started taking pictures of the rude employee and brought it up the ladder.

Just piss poor training from a customer service point. Usually if places don't want you taking pictures a simple explanation gets people to cooperate without a problem. On that note I've sent my wife pictures of all sorts of critters and birds whenever I use to take our dog to Petsmart for grooming without any issues.
Maybe if your wife said something like," I'm sorry I'm taking pictures. I just wanted to send them to this poor little boy name Timmy. He said his last dying wish was to see a picture of one of those hermit crabs with the colorful shells, and that the Texans go to Superbowl..."

"oh sorry man, i take pictures now since i am not used to talking with actual people. 15 years in solitary on death row will do that to a guy."

Somewhat playing devils advocate here, but you really aren't entitled to take pictures. You are however entitled to choose not to shop there despite questionable reasoning.

                              1. Spies are capable of lying.. I own a small franchised business here in Houston and our franchise policy is no pictures, obviously to protect trade secrets in a highly competitive market. I expect this to be enforced by my employees. Do you know how awkward it actually is to tell someone they aren't allowed to take pictures? A seemingly harmless activity?

                              2. Employee was just doing his job. Are you prepared to offer the employee a new job if a security/manager questioned why he was so lackadaisical in enforcing store policy and subsequently got fired?

So yes, it's not ok to be rude, but to incriminate an entire corporation based on the actions of one employee is rather silly if you ask me. It's definitely your right to choose where to shop, but it's just one hourly worker (who probably wont be there a month from now) in a company that grosses billions. If you're expecting every employee you meet in chain stores to be model employees than you must live in some sort of utopian society where no one has a bad day, or substandard employees aren't hired. I live in Houston, where the air sucks, traffic sucks, people are afraid of people who don't look like them, and where walmarts aren't as scary (methheads much??) as they are in the boonies.

But its multiple employees at different stores so the company does have something wrong and ya depeneding on the severity of how rude the guy was he should be fired over it doesn't deserve to work in a job with customer service if I was rude to a customer for my company they'd fire in a heartbeat its not condoned at all customer service is #1
