Shrimp can be very easy, I'd just recommend a decent low tech planted tank, sponge filter and a fairly good light (even a couple compact bulbs 6500K) and leave it run for a few months empty. Once all the cycling is over and you begin seeing growth and some of the macro organism moving about you are ready to add shrimp and soon you'll be giving them away. Stick with a Neo species and they work terrifically in Houston tap. Once you have a better understanding of the shrimp you can challenge yourself in some of the more difficult species and see what you like and don't.In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

my shrimp are loving the guppy grass (Najas Guadalupensis) that i got from troy and it grows pretty fast. If you are really feeling industrious and just a little bit german then you could look up the Poret filter instead of a sponge. It basically does the same thing but it is a filter pad on one end of the aquarium with an uplift tube or airstone somehow drawing the current through. I havent looked too deeply into how to use one but the dwarf shrimp issue of Amazonas magazine depicted those as standard equipment for the german breeders. Interestingly they also feed dried thistle and birch leaves and that along with IAL makes up part of the 'substrate"75G Standard - High Light Planted Community Fish
