The best Hang on the Back Filters are made by Hagen: Aqua Clear Series.

The best Canisters are made by Eheim.  I still think noting beats the classics, even the Pros, are not as good in my opinion.

hehehe...Eheim...looks like someone clearing their throat..

Thanks for all of the advice guys! I will look into getting the Aquaclear (50 I think it is). I will also try to find a sponge to fit over the intake when I get my guppies going...or maybe I can just get some panty hose...undecided right now. I'm thinking the sponge would keep some good bacteria in it as a plus...that could be my main source of biological filtration and then just use the carbon filter inserts or whatever... What do y'all think?

Found this on e-bay...This would work, right?   How hard is it to get something like this at a LFS?

          Save your money goto Walmart..
Pick up a sponge to clean your car with.  (ie large)
** MAKE SURE THIS SPONGE IS THE KIND THAT HAS NO SOAP OR OTHER CHEMICALS IN IT **
Cut in half.  Make a cut in the center of one of half's and attach.  Put the sponge in a water bucket first and squeeze it several times.. make sure that no foam comes from it at all.  Foam indicates chemical / soap.  Then attach it to the end of the tube.  Make sure that you dont push the tube all the way through.
If you are wanting to get one listed on Ebay your local LFS should carry them.  Else your next trip to Houston there are several places you can pick them up from..

I have two filters on my guppy tank (I am seeding one right now) and dont seem to have a loss of babies.  I dont have a sponge on the intake.

Cool! Good idea...I like the do-it-yourself stuff! It's CHEAP! LOL! I bet I could cut the sponge to look like that if I wanted, too. Thanks for the info!

                  Re: MORE Filter questions...sorry...LOL

I've always bought the sponges for the AC 110 and cut as needed. No worries about soap or anything else with them.

Fire_chair, those will work great.  Its just $6 vs $1.50.  You can find them at the Dollar store sometimes.

If you are looking for something to cover the intake without hindering waterflow, I would use a fine mesh material.  You can wrap it around the the the end of the intake a few time to make it highly unlikely that any fry get sucked in.

If you really want a good option is to buy or make your own internal sponge filter.  Not hard to make.

Are they really $6? I thought mine was $3 or $4, maybe I got it onsale. A DIY sponge filter is way cheaper than you buy one for, good call there.

                        Re: MORE Filter questions...sorry...LOL

I buy those large sponges used for coarse filtration on wet/dry sumps which are like $5 and I have 5 intakes covered right now and still have more then half of it left.

The problem I had with the Bio-Wheel HOB's was not so much as the impellers but with the crap bio-wheel stopping which kills it's selling point....also if you really think about the beneficial aspect of it there is little surface area on that wheel compared to something like a small bag of sintered glass rings and then when the wheel stops there is only that small surface area that is getting soaked so that's that.... also if you salt your tank often it builds up all over this area which sucks. Then there's the small media area that it provides compared to the large amount of room given with the AC's.

I prefer Eheim classics over them all though....On my smaller tanks I am running the old Eheim 2211-2011 which are freaking cool!

                          Re: MORE Filter questions...sorry...LOL

I had a Penguin with the biowheel and it does have a bit of water running sound, plus a lot of evaporation. I found that if the wheel stopped it was because the slats in the wheel were a bit twisted, just straighten and it worked fine. I bought a clamshell-type frame that can hold cut pads so I didn't have to keep buying the replacement cartridges. Eventually I switched to a canister as I was using it on a planted tank with CO2 injection and the HOB filters are not so good for that.

Fins out what the flow rate for the Aquaclear is, they tend to be very fast and may be a problem with fry. If you get hosery for the intake, please get "sandalfoot" so you don't have that dark reinforced toe area visible!

If you need a sponge filter, just buy one, they are so cheap online. Heck, I'll sell you one of mine but it wouldn't be worth the cost in gas to come get it.
