  • 55 gallon setup

I have my 20 gallon community tank up and running and my dad really likes it and wants a tank for
his home now ( I'd be setting it up ) he doesn't really care what's in it, and he is leaning toward the 55 gallon long. what fish would do well with our Houston tap water??

Just about anything will work, depending on how you set it up.

I've kept and bred them in houston water.

60-80% wc weekly with no problems. Aqua soil used for substrate and it was like magic happened.

wow that's impressive!!!!! now this might be stupid question, when I do my weekly 25% pwc I don't take the fish out. do you have to when you do a 60% pwc???? I have a 20 gallon w/ a pair of apisto agassizi

I never net fish unless it's to be sold or tank gets rescape.

I've done upwards to 100% water change through a carbon bottle with no problems. Think I have vids or photos somewhere.

What about a tropical community since he likes yours so much. Thats what I had when I stayed on the west side and I never had any problems. With a community you would have more fish to choose from and mix match different ones.

Yah id like to see that if you can find it...

Also another question might sound silly but since we have a little ammonia in our tap, how do you refill the water back in the tank without exposing the fish to that ammonia? I know you dechlorinate it, I do it with prime but I know it takes a few minutes for it to take the ammonia out of the tap water.. How do you refill the tank ?

I have a python sort of thing , that attaches to the sink and what not..

It's in one of my tropheus threads or search my screen name on youtube, it might be there.

With prime or amquel plus it will bind the ammonia and as long as your bio filter is good it'll consume it before causing havoc on the fish. Probably would slowly work up to the larger amount of wc though with that on mind.

I use a python right now as well and am doing about 80% water changes with just amquel plus but before I would run the water through a carbon filter

I add the prime as I go when I am putting water back into the tanks. For example, if I drain 75G out of my 135G or 125G, once I've replaced half of that I add about half a capful, then once I"m done I add the rest. Never had an issue doing it this way.
