I picked up three comet gold fish today. I think these are koi and not gold fish because the larger fish (koi since they have the barbels) are chasing the new smaller comet goldfish around the tank. I did not know that the Koi are territorial... Can I build a separation tank to give these smaller guys a chance to grow a little bigger (2 inch right now) to be less bullied by the koi?

Awesome, that would be for the best.
The usual recommended gallon/fish rule for goldfish is 20g/goldfish. So even just one goldfish and one common pleco is pushing it for a 30g.
See if your friend can't take both the goldfish and the koi (and maybe even the pleco) and then you can start your tank with some much more appropriate fish. It would make for a much better first experience with fish!
