I picked up three comet gold fish today. I think these are koi and not gold fish because the larger fish (koi since they have the barbels) are chasing the new smaller comet goldfish around the tank. I did not know that the Koi are territorial... Can I build a separation tank to give these smaller guys a chance to grow a little bigger (2 inch right now) to be less bullied by the koi?

This is a 30g tank, correct? How many koi and comets do you have in there now?

That's going to be a very crowded tank.

the three existing fish are koi (5 inch) not goldfish.. I just picked up three small comet goldfish (1.5 inch). of course, one pleco... This is a 30 gallon tank.

30 gallon tank is way too small for one koi... and you have 7 fish in there now.
Koi and the pleco grow to be huge fish.

I think the previous owner did not know the difference between a goldfish and a koi. I did not know either until I studied into it.

I found a friend who wants to build a pond so these koi will be happy in the pond soon.

Awesome, that would be for the best.

The usual recommended gallon/fish rule for goldfish is 20g/goldfish. So even just one goldfish and one common pleco is pushing it for a 30g.

See if your friend can't take both the goldfish and the koi (and maybe even the pleco) and then you can start your tank with some much more appropriate fish. It would make for a much better first experience with fish!

I am trying to learn about how fast do these fish grow..

I agree with your comments for the mature size of the fish and the appropriate size of tank but these guys are no where close to their mature size.

Yet again, I was misinformed by LFS people. Are we talking about full grown size? LFS told me 2 gallons per inch of goldfish when I was keeping them. For certain, those koi grow to be monstrous. My dad has a pond behind his house with enormous goldfish.
