  • Growing up baby (fish secreting negative feedback, inhibiting growth)

    Hi folks....

Back... WAYYY Back when I was raising fish as a young kid WAY BACCKK in the good olden days... in the mid 60's and beyond, I was told time and time again by various people that good water changes were essential for fry to grow.

There was a little old lady up in Eureka Montana at the time that had the hugest swordtails I had ever seen at that time and since then. She had green, red swordtails that were in the 4 inch range easily.. Platies that were almost as huge.. Her secret... Changed water every two days.. She had a well so that was easier to do...

Then there is a fellow up North in Cleveland, Ohio by the name of Frank Mueller who has an automated drip system that changes his water by 10 percent each day. His fronts were 16 plus inches inside of a year and half... just huge...

I read a lot of articles back in those days from the TFH, Axlerod and others and I remember reading articles that pertained to fish excreting a thyroid growth inhibitor that affected the other fish or similar sized fish.

If fish A was two inch... the excretion was such that it limited all the fish below two inches from catching up and passing fish A.. and so forth.

Maybe I am not googling this right, but am trying to find out more about this...

In addition to the limiter of growth, we know the water quality is so very important as to the other parameters such as excretion of waste, the enclosed system, unnatural food and unnatural way of eating the food. So with that in mind.

Are there any of you folks that have done any kind of comparison with others and noticed either excellent growth or lousy growth of your fry...

    Just wondering

    Bill

I don't know about our fry, but our overall fish are generally larger than average. I feed a lot though....and add vitamins to the food. When people see our fish, the general reaction is "OMG! That is a HUGE _____." or "What IS that?? It's huge??" They don't look huge to me, but I see them everyday. It could be that they are just fat, so they look larger than average.

I've heard that about something being secreted that inhibits growth though. But never read up on it myself. Now I'm curious. I'll see if I can dig something up too. :)

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I know that discus fry grow much larger and quicker in tanks that get daily 70% waterchanges + heavy feeding
I know breeders that grow discus fry to a whopping 6 inches in 10 months with twice daily 100% waterchanges + heavy feeding

Thus I see no reason so far to discount the negative feedback theory.

In a town that charges almost three times the amount of water used for its sewer and our water bill goes up in a non incremental way. I can only afford to change water periodically and not enough....

Sooo then could I recycle my water...

            or

Over in the DIY section we have this build your own carbon snake rather than the carbon bottle... If I were to run the water through that carbon snake, would it clean all the impurities out?????? Could there be an additional way of cleaning the water up more so than just by changing water??????
