  • how many pounds of rock in a 29 gallon?

i was wondering how many pounds of rocks i would be able to put in a 29 gallon without stressing it or cracking anything. i wanted some pretty big rocks to stack up or something for it to extend out of the water and go around the left side of the tank. i just didnt want to buy it all and then find out i couldnt put it in my tank because it might break it lol. if anyone knows "about" or a "safe" number of pounds of rocks i can put it a 29 gallon, i would appreciate it

If you put some egg crate or light difusser in the tank under your gravel, you will be surprised the amount you can put in there. I'm sure someone else will chime in soon. They sell the stuff at home depot or lowes in the light section.

+1 on the egg crate if you want to be safe. but you would be surprised you could probably completely fill that tank with rock and have no problems.

Couple years ago I read a really good thread in the Equipment section of Cichlid Forum.

In there was a couple longterm moderators, and a engineer from Oceanic Aquariums.

He posted pictures where he took a 125 gallon aquarium and filled it with 50lb bags of gravel all the way to the top. They lifted the tank up and then filled it with water and no leaks.

I cannot remember what his final outcome was, but you might want to search there.

In one of my 180 gallon tanks, I have had atleast 400lbs of petrified wood in that tank and no leaks in the 5 years I have owned it.

I had a 70 gallon tank, stocked with 250-300lbs of Limestone for 10 years or more, and no leaks.

I run bare bottom on all my tanks, no leaks, no eggcrate.

BUT.... all my tanks are made from Oceanic except (1) of my 20L and my 29 gallon.

I saw a video on YouTube where a guy put 400ish pounds of stuff in a 10g.

The problem is that if the bottom is tempered if you scratch it your toast. Tempering makes 3X stronger which is why they use it, but scratching or chipping it turns into ittby bitty pieces.
