Its just a type of algae. You will need to do plenty of water changes. Its caused by a lot of light into the tank and/or excess nutrients just like any other algae it just harder to get rid of. The other way is to get a lot of algae eating fish/shrimp depending on the tank mates.

Looking at your tank list your options appear to be water changes, Plecos, or Olive Nerites. Olive Nerites do a great job but if you have female and males they will lay white eggs everywhere they wont fertilize but it can look ugly at times.

Turn you filter off drop the water level a little use a small metal brush and get busy let the sediment settle for a few minutes and siphon.
Repeat once a week and if there are no plants in your tank you can even turn the lights off a few days just to make sure if it is algae, it will die.
Cheers,

A pic would be very helpfull
what kind of wood?
could be the start of algae (low light) or fungus. either way WC is in your future (so says the magic 8 ball)
if it ends up being algae, add shrimp (if you can) and hitthe algae with excel. Directly if you can. this will kill the algae and let the shrimp eat it faster.
Also, the little red neon gobys that hve been becomming popular will eat it as well without excel.
If it is fungus, WC and ride it out. Remove as much as you can manually and suck it out with your syphon tube, if it is fungus it will grow in size so that it will appear to be blobs. Not sure if med's will help as it is a differant kind of fungus then what the med's target.
Post pic's so a good id can be made.Houston Areas Aquatic Plant Society
