    Re: Apistos

yes i like local breeders as well. i think its because the fish are bred in similar water as they weill be kep in your tank so they are more accustommed to that kind of water its mineral content and the like, or do you use RO water? asnyway good luck in your search.

      Re: Apistos

Hi Tiapan I use well water from a municipality 5 wells service where i live it is very alkaline but very soft too my ph id 8.4  25ppm gh 400-800ppm kh nitrates/nitrites negligable. My apistos and other soft water fish love it but eggs do not develope very well I have to artifically hatch them to get any offspring. I got right now 11-12 panduro 10 red tail agassizii 7-10 hongsloi 20+ borellii 30+ pebas 30+ german blue rams growing out have Nannacara anamolas in hatchery working with trifasciatas bitaeniatas nijssenii steindachnerii taeniacara candidi nannacara taenia and cacatuoides 3 forms  borellii 2 forms pebas panduro hongsloi 2 forms  eunotus incas and cruzii so I have a pretty good collection of S.A. dwarves would like to get some T-bars apistogrammoides.

            Re: Apistos

The species list (I THINK!) ... it is just that I have just started with scientific names.  I recognized most of them... just these drew a blank:

            "taeniacara candidi nannacara taenia"

How do you artificially hatch the apisto eggs? I currently have 6 cacatuoides.

              Re: Apistos

Hi ATH I see. well The taeniacara candidi their common name is the torpedo cichlid they are the only representative of their genus. Here are a couple pics

The Nannacara taenia are a smaller species of the Nannacara famaly they look sim to the Nannacara anamola but smaller and dif color.Sorry i do not have pics at this time.
I use this method to artifically hatch my apistos it is for open/rock spawners but works for me. I had to tweek it a litel by useing a UGF rigid airline with an airstone bent at a 45 deg angle to allow it to fit into a cave/pot so the eggs get the required water flow. Here is the link
              http://aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles...mbreeding.html   Hope this helps

                  Great pictures & interesting artical

Has anyone else used hydrogen peroxide for a fungus stop on eggs ?

What is your food of choice for new born fry ?

                    Re: Apistos

thanks I use hydrogen peroxcide exclusivlly and it works great thing it breaks down into plain ole water and dosent stain every thing. I use micro worms and vinagar ells first week then switch to mixture with BBS then eventually flake and prepared foods. In a pinch I will get frozen BBS but apisto fry will not readly accept it as well as live. But just after freeswimming i feed micro worms and vinagar ells.

There are mor pics of the majority of my apistos in the photobucket link in my sig when you get there click on apistogramma album link

More nice tank pictures.  Looks like you've been building your own tanks & stands.  You should do a "how to" for the up and comming members.

I notice the NW corner tanks had a brown tint...  do you use peat ?

Hi Actually PHPH I didn't build any of the tanks did build the stands though. The tanks were given to me by a friend the 7 gals and 35 s the ones without plastic frames. They were built by him like 20 yrs ago they are old. As for the tint it is from the drift wood i haevest from area creeks. Hum doing a article on my stand building maybe. Thanks for the compliments.
