Those altums look amazing.... Great pics! Thanks for sharing
Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.
The only people I have heard of that have successfully spawned Altums in captivity are in Germany and Japan in huge facilities with unlimited resources. For the hobbiest to succeed is at best rare, more accurately, virtually impossible. I've been told to even have a pair try, they would need to be alone in a minimum of a 200 gallon tank. I did not get them to try and spawn them, I got them because they are awesome looking and I needed a challenge. If, however, I ever do get them to spawn in captivity, I will then be independently wealthy.
Reasoning with some people is like trying to nail jello to a wall...
My PH here in Katy is about 7.9 and that's what they will stay in for now. There are two sides to the PH discussion. One is to keep them in their natural PH of around 6, the other is to keep them in local PH if they are doing well. They don't handle swings in PH very well so I opted to keep them in the local PH since they are doing so good.. If I ever do attempt to try and spawn them I will definately need to lower the PH to their original home level.
