    (Now with pics)Nicaragua Pair Gender Id

    I recently bought a BEAUTIFUL pair of nics from the local AquaZoo (Thanks Shannon and Prosper =])

    I know I have a male and female, but I'm a little puzzled, from the websites I've looked at, they've said the male in the less colorful one, with long fins and a small forehead "Bump"  and the female is brilliantly colored with round fins...

    Well that's not the case in my pair =]

    My colorful nic has long pointed fins with a forehead "Bump" and my grey is smaller with completely rounded fins... All the opposite of what I see everywhere...

    Anyone care to shed some light on this matter? Does the internet have it backwards?

    Take some pictures of your fish and we can take a look.. from the looks of it from what I can read the female does color up very nicely.  Like many Central & South A's, both the male and female show great color.

    What fish do Jesper have

        How long have you had the fist ?   I notice they are both right now in the corner of the tank looking stressed.  Have they settled in yet and made a territory.   I like what I see.. and it does look like in the last picture that the female is nearest the glass and the male behind her.
        I would like to see them when they are little more in the open and swimming around before I would want to give a better "for sure" answer for you there :)

          I just got them last, night, but I'm working on rearranging items =] Had to fish out one of my mean fish who was picking on them, he's now in my hospital tank. Hopefully they'll settle down when I redo the tank, It's in ruins right now, plus we just picked up a 55lb+ piece of holey rock for free that we are going to sledge hammer to make smaller pieces. It has nice big holes and maybe they'll feel more at home  :wink:  Also they had just woke up when I took the pic, they swim around alot, but both sleep crowded in one corner  8)  They are adorable though, and Kudos to Aquazoo for such great fish =) I can always count on them!

            That is a pair.  The female is the more colorful one.  Males have spotting in the unpaired fins (like fredrichstahlii)and are mostly yellow/orange.
