Hey guys! I have a friend who recently purchased a 40 gallon breeder setup and he's wanting to get some CA cichlids for it. Like me, he has more experience with Malawi and he's kept many planted tanks, but he really wants to try something new. (Can't blame him!) I told him I'd ask around for stocking ideas, he said he likes the T-bar cichlid, as well as several others from that genus. He doesn't want to breed them, so any stocking suggestions for a nice little community?

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll pass them on to him. He said he definitely wants something from the cryptoheros/similar family though. HRP's might be a good choice. Talking to him now, he said he really wants/likes:
HRP
Sajica
Fire mouth
Nicaragua
Rainbow
Cutteri
Is there a way he could keep 2-3 singles from this list and throw in some dithers?
Also open to more suggestions. He said he'll look into the geos.Currently working on:
`6.6 Gallon Low-tech Planted
`36 Gallon bowfront with DIY background

I imagine a HRP, Fire Mouth, and a Rainbow might work. I'd be far more interested in breeding one species though. I think a CA biotope tank would be cool in that regard. Maybe get some Mexican Tetra and some type of CA Goodeid for dithers. they can certainly take care of themselves and its rewarding to keep a fish extinct in the wild. For any bottom dweller it gets tough, not much imported in the trade. I'd probably try and go with a similar body size/shape species from SA, like a smaller pimelod (graceful or Pimodella Chagresi, even one of the smaller bumblebee psuedopimelodidae work work well and give the effect of a larger pimelod without busting the tank and being able to hold its own)In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
