  • Thinking about getting some Discus

I have been wanting to buy a discus or two for a tank I have setup.
    Tank2.jpgTank1.jpg

I have had Angelfish for years, and I currently have 3 female angelfish. I have never kept discus. I know I am going to get different opinions, but I was wondering if I should keep these fish with two discus. The tank is about 80 gallons.

I also have a clown pleco, 2 botia loaches, and 3 corys, 2 ottos, that I planned on putting in the tank. I am not worried about them, but I have heard since angelfish are aggressive about eating they can edge out the discus. Any thoughts?

(should be moved to Discus subforum, sorry)

I think they should do ok together. If the discus are adult.

          Thinking about getting some Discus

Go talk to Dan at HAW. For a newbie to discus I wouldn't do it. Angelfish are more aggressive than Discus.

Generally its not recommended because discus and angelfish can carry different parasites that they have an immunity to themselves but the other does not. Its been done before but you'll need to pay extra close attention to make sure that neither of them is getting sick after adding them.

IME discus do better in groups because they always pick on each other. If you managed to get a couple "paired up" discus you may be ok but otherwise your discus may fight all the time. If they're paired up, they may fight the angelfish when they lay eggs.

Take a trip to HAW and talk to Dan. They've got some of the best discus in town and Dan is really knowledgeable.

I didn't realize that Dan was back in the states and running HAW again?! Awesome, I buy almost exclusively from HAW (or auction). Thanks!
