  • Discus in Garage

Does anyone in Texas or specifically Houston area keep Discus in their garage? If so what precautions do you take if any about high and low temps around the year?

I don't think you have to worry about the high temp. Since the water gets around 82-86 in the garage depending how how the day is. During the winter just run a reliable heater in the tank to the temp you like. You might have to run 2 heaters depending on the aize of your tank since you dont want to over work one heater and having 2 is just more reliable to me.

That would be a little different , Is your patio full shade ? Even partial shade may get the water to hot . IMO

That's what I'm worried about. My patio is shaded most of the day. How do the guys that run smaller stock ponds in their backyards overcome temp fluctuations?

I believe the large amounts of water in a pound can take longer to heat up and allot of water movement helps too.

i have a 75 going in my garage just to see how the temp fluctuates. This is an insulated garage with a large oak tree over it mind you, but the temp has not risen above the mid 80s so i am going to try plants and some fish in it. I would try it out and monitor your own area first but i would feel that discus might do well in this setup. in the winter, i would break out heaters and wrap a blanket around the aquarium.

Do you just have your garage door insulated? What specifically do you mean by insulated garage?

the garage is prefinished for conversion into another room so that means that the walls and ceiling have full insulation batting like the rest of the house does. sometimes the buiders will not insulate these places in attached garages, which is kinda silly imo. insulation isnt that expensive compared to the cost of doing it later. most garage doors are insulated but unless you are air conditioning the room its not that important. the overhead insulation and/or a radiant barrier is whats going to keep the garage cool.

yeah more water and especially surface area will probably help since more surface area means more evaporation and that results in lower water temps
