  • Juvenile earth eaters: Automatic gender?

Well, I got a couple of juvenile Satanoperca jurupari from The Fish Gallery the other evening. A bit young to sex, but I asked the dude to make a best guess.

Reading about them when I got home (yes, I did it backward), I came across a Brazilian study that discussed this species... and their hermaphroditic nature. However, fishbase.org lists them as dioecious. So I'm guessing that if they are hermaphroditic, they're sequentially so. This makes me hope that since I got them young (both under two inches) and there are only two of them in the tank, they will automatically become opposite genders.

Does anyone know anything about this? It's hard to find any more information than I already found.
Trogdor was a man. Or maybe he was a dragon man. Or maybe he was just a dragon. But he was still TROGDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!

You know, fish are great. I love my fish. But what I really want is a monkey.

I figured I'd add what I came across:

    The FishBase reproductive profile:

    The Brazilian study:
