  • Mixing Angel and Discus

In a few months I will be stocking my 110 gal tall (I am still building now) My wife wants both angel and discus. I have seen them together before, but was told they have different perasites that can hurt eachother. Are there certain groups I should stick with mixing, or should I treat them before mixing? How can I make this work? she also wants community fish in with them.
    Thanks

I have them together in my tank with no problem. You just have make sure your discus get enough food during feeding time since angel tend to eat really aggressive compare to discus.

IMO discus are already difficult enough keeping healthy and well fed in a community tank you are just making your experience even harder. I would be more worried about feeding them then transmittal of parasites. I am sure they can but from my experience i didn't have a problem with that it was making sure the angels didn't eat everything before the discus

If you want healthy discus don't mix them with nothing that can compete for the food, Angels are agressive eaters and your discus cannot compete with them.
If you are planning small discus you need understand that they requiere more job than the adults (of course the prices are a big difference), more job means more food and more frecuent Water Change (at least twice a week at 75%) and keeping your temp between 85F - 90F.
When they are adult everything is more easy: less WC, lower temp, planted tank, tankmates...
DIscus are beautiful, just make sure of do a good research.
BTW they like hi-protein food like Tetra Color bits, bloodworms, beefheart, no veggies

          Good luck!!! :emt_thumbs:

+1 on everything but the last statement. Discus will consume vegetable matter. I mix spinach, spirulina, shelled, cooked peas in my beefheart mix. Wild discus consume flowers, fruits, seeds and shoots during certain times of the year. See Bleher's Discus Vol. 1

I've been keeping discus since the 80s. I wouldn't mix discus and angels.

If you mix them I would get only large "bull male" discus as they are more aggressive and can compete. Problem is you will have to watch them to determine which is the dominant males and they will cost a lot more. But if you want baby discus for price I would not mix at all because they will be stunted. I learned this the hard way.

+1, what i tried to say was no veggies as the main diet. I also mix veggies and vitamins in my beefheart mix but as a complement.

I agree halfly, I keep angels and discus together in my 210, I had 13 discus and 12 angels, I now have 20 discus and 4 angels in that tank, I left 4 female angels in there and have had absolutely no issues even at feeding time. I didnt have an issue when they were all in there either, I just had 4 pairs of angels spawn off as well as two pair of discus so I used my head and put them into their own tanks.

I can for surely say my discus are about 4x more aggressive then my angels are. Its always hit and miss with any fish.
